The world No 1 bridge player has been suspended after failing a drugs test.

Geir Helgemo, who is Norwegian but represents Monaco in bridge events, tested positive for synthetic testosterone and the female fertility drug clomifene at a World Bridge Series event in Orlando in September.

After accepting he had breached anti-doping rules, Helgemo was suspended by the World Bridge Federation (WBF) until 20 November. He also had all titles, medals and points from the 2018 World Bridge Series revoked.

Kari-Anne Opsal, president of the Norwegian Bridge Federation, said the drugs were “not performance enhancing”. In a statement on the federation’s website, she said: “Geir Helgemo … has previously played for the Norwegian national team and is our biggest star. Many within the bridge community know Geir and respect him

Why do they care about steroids for bridge? That's something where they should worry about Ritalin or Adderal.

Why is a man taking female fertility drugs?

Screw his Norwegian arse playing for Monaco. Sometimes I find myself 'flexing' when playing Bridge -- mostly as an intimidation technique to get them on tilt.

I imagine they just used blanket WADA type language and lists. I shot competition rifle in college and we fell under the standard PED umbrella list when the vast majority of them would have hurt performance. The most important PED to test for 30 years ago for shooting sports was Beta blockers which would have been horrible for most other sports.

Clomid is only approved by the FDA for use in women, but it’s sometimes prescribed off-label as an infertility treatment in men. Learn more about off-label prescription drug use.

I believe they use clomid after cycles to help recover.

from Wikipedia:
quote:

Clomifene is sometimes used in the treatment of male hypogonadism as an alternative to testosterone replacement therapy.[16] It has been found to increase testosterone levels by 2- to 2.5-fold in hypogonadal men.[16]

and
quote:

Clomifene has been used in the treatment of gynecomastia.[17] It has been found to be useful in the treatment of some cases of gynecomastia but it is not as effective as tamoxifen or raloxifene for this indication.[18] It has shown variable results for gynecomastia and hence is not recommended for treatment of the condition.[19]

Yeah I immediately though the title was a misquote and was meant to be "PEDs" which would mean "Adderall". This is dumb because there's no way a female hormone gives you an advantage in anything. Especially cognitive brain function for a card game.
