Workout board - Weight/Fat loss help

I'm fed up and need to lose some weight. A little background...I never was the most athletic guy. I grew up in the Midwest and now live in Chicago. I'm early 40's and as every Midwestern...I love beer, deep dish pizza, and cheap Chinese food. That said...I'm not "too far" out of shape. I'm right around 6'0 and 200 pounds. I'm not in terrible shape...just soft and pudgy (especially in the midsection, love handles, and thighs).
I'm asking for a little help. I never really had to work out/watch what I eat until now. With my wife popping out our two children in the past 4 years and with work....any thought of the gym and what I ate went out the back door.
Can some suggest some pointers on ideas to lose weight? I'd like to drop at least 20 pounds. Weight lifting and cardio? Should I do low weight, high reps or vice versa? What's the best cardio machines I should get on? I'm pretty new to the gym and I'd like to make the best of it. I know results aren't made overnight, but I'm sick of not feeling as well as I did before and my clothes fitting tight.
Also, any basic food tips?
Smart arse replies will be received, but legitimate ones will be welcomed. Much thanks guys!

The guy's never worked out before, and you recommend an advanced weight lifting program?

Weightlifting
Yoga
Chicken, lean ground sirloin, fish, turkey, whatever. Meats are good.
Brown rice, quinoa, steel cut oats (in the morning).
Nuts, avocados, eggs
Buy bags of veggies and steam them.
Really, I just make a combination of whatever. Always eggs, bacon, steel cut oats in the morning.
Lunch is a meat with either quinoa or brown rice and veggies.
Nuts and stuff for snacks.
Meat and veggies for dinner.
I dunno. Worked for me. I went from a 37" waist to 31" in no time at all, really.

Whenever I want to drop a few pounds, I limit carbs and fat and eat vegetables and fruit more than anything else.

If you want to lose quick, low carb diet and run your arse off. It's tough but the pounds fall off of you.
It's tough to maintain so a more balanced diet might work better after a while or if you don't have a specific timeline to losing weight.

Do the following EVERY DAY
Lift weights Start small with lots of reps
Sit ups
Cardio - run
Sweat. A LOT
Sweat more
Sweat again
No sugar
Watch fat intake
Drink a 1/2 gallon of cold water a day
Eat small portions at dinner (never eat a full meal where you're full)
Snack on peanuts, fruit, hummus
***You should constantly be hungry
I don't care what the board says. I did all the above and lost 34 pounds in 31 days.

Vegetables can be high in carbs. Carbs aren't bad. They assist in muscle growth. Fruit has sugar, and sometimes in very high quantities.
High fiber diets are pretty clutch. Drink water.

don't drink as much beer.
drink some liquor instead if you really like to drink.
beer is only good once and awhile to me anyway.
didn't use to be though
don't drink soft drinks.
don't eat late night.
i guess.

Your gym will probably have a squat rack. To cut down on time in the gym, in addition to doing squats in the squat rack also do your curls there.
