He has never really worked out before. How is he suppose to know what exercise to do? How is he suppose to know if he keeping the proper balance of extensors and flexors when working out? He needs an app to give him a simple beginner workout to learn the basics. Hopefully he builds his knowledge base as he goes. There is nothing that puts ppl in the orthopedics surgeon or sports medicine office faster than someone new to exercise trying to do it own their own (other than P90X, orthopdic surgeons love P90X).

quote:

He doesn't need to do weight loss workouts. He should lift heavy to preserve muscle maybe even gain some while

Lifting heavy does not preserve muscle mass anymore efficiently than moderate lifting. What degrades muscle mass when you are fasting is amino acid deficit. The body is going to breakdown muscle for amino acids to produce glucose to meet caloric demand. However if he has adequate protein intake than they will be free amino acids so it won't have to or will replace any amino acid loss. Plus if you start out lifting heavy you will be so damn sore that you quit. Do you learn how to swim by jumping off a boat 10 miles offshore or learn to drive by starting off on I-10 in Baton Rouge rush hour traffic? No, you start off slow and work your way up. The OP also said he wanted to loss weight and was tired of his clothes fitting tight. If he followed your advice did not injure himself or quit because of the soreness he would add muscle mass faster underneath the fat. That would push the fat out and make his clothes tighter which is the opposite of what the OP wanted.

quote:

Also fasted morning walks are best for stripping fat and preserving muscle.

Any morning aerobic or cardio exercise gets the metabolism going. Since the morning exercise is usually before any major meal is eaten (I like a granola bar before my morning workout just to keep the hunger pains down) and the body has used alot of glycogen during the overnight fast so it has to breakdown fat to get glucose to power the muscles and the rest of the body.

So you question my 20 minutes of cardio/day but tell me that a morning walk is the best way to burn fat? A morning walk is cardio or aerobic exercise.

Is that why the American Heart Association, my medical textbooks, and every course I took to get my kinesiology degree suggest 20 minutes of cardio exercise/day for heart health? I guess some internet badass knows better the aunch of cardiologists, the writers of medical textbooks, and a professors that have PhDs in kinesiology?

Really a 40 year old with a history or beer and pizza consumption doesn't need to eat healthy? You are the one that is spewing bullshite.

quote:

This I agree with but if you are drinking 2 beers every day than you are an alcoholic and have bigger problems than just getting fit. Limit alcohol to 1 day a week period and if you go crazy than fast the next day.

2 beers per day for a male (1 for female) actually has positive benefits. If you go over 2 beers per day then you undo all those positive benefits.
quote:

There is some good news when it comes to drinking a moderate amount of beer every day. According to a 2008 article published in "Biofactors," drinking a moderate amount can reduce the risk of heart disease. The compounds in the hops used to make beer can help lower your cholesterol levels and risk of hardening of the arteries, two risk factors for a heart attack. Moderate intake of beer can also boost bone mineral density, notes a 2009 article published in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition." A 2010 article published in the "Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology" reports that certain compounds in hops might also help prevent skin cancer and other skin disorders.

Getting a baseline is a good thing but the blood work is by far the most important part of this. Oh and most doctors are stupid as frick when it comes to working out, nutrition and losing weight.

Did I tell him to get workout or nutritional advice from his doctor? No I just said get a physical because he is 40 and has BMI of 27. BMI is a bullshite statistic if his blood work and physical come back good, but if there is a problem being overweight is risk factor that he needs to get down now. The whole reason for the weight loss or getting in shape is because of his kids so he should get a physical so he know his overall health outlook.

8. Do everything in moderation

This is bullshite. Complete bullshite.

Really how is it bullshite?

Drinking too much beer makes you fat and does damage to your liver, but drinking 1-2 beers per day is good for your heart
Eating too much fast food is unhealthy but moderate indulgence can be a nice stress reliever and family building experience (i.e. pizza and movie night or fridays)
Workout is good, but if you overtrain (and yes it is a real thing) you will injure yourself

So how is moderation a bad thing?

Lol a trainer is completely unnecessary. The internet + youtube will do just fine. There's plenty of reputable sources out there that have been successfully followed by beginners for years.

He is wanting to lose weight so should he not do a minimum of 20 minutes of cardio/day or 150 minutes per week?

This is wholly unnecessary for weight loss. You do not have to do cardio to lose weight. Not that cardio is bad, or no one should ever do it, but to say you need to do a minimum 20 mins a day of cardio is complete and utter horseshite.

This. WeeWee sounds like he's a pretty knowledgeable, but saying stuff like this almost discredits everything he's saying. Also, throw away your medical textbooks and quit taking advice from the American Heart Association because they derive all of their bullshite from biased faulty science and they push an agenda.

Again on the same page but doing 20 min of cardio just to do it is what i was disagreeing with. It needs to be fasted in the morning to aid fat loss or it should be Hiit, other than that cardio is kind of a waste unless its your thing.

I never said it was more important than other meals, just said it's important.

Mainly just saying not to skip because it could throw off his diet for the day and cause him to eat more later on, since he is trying to eat better. I'm not saying he needs to be eating a huge breakfast either.

I would imagine it would be vety difficult to go from eating like crap to fasting like you suggested right away. Like setting yourself up for failure, frustration, and then saying f it and going back to eating like crap.

And not everyone can fast. Me personally.....I have to eat something (even if just a small snack) every 5 hours or so while awake or I get headaches, dizziness, irritable and shaky as hell.

AHA? The same clowns who said fat was bad a while back? Please...

Seriously, do you know why they say 20 minutes of "cardio"? Do you? It's because it will get the heart pumping on a declining blood oxygen concentration.

You can do the same thing lifting weights. Maybe not some fricking ten pound curls...but yes, you can.

shite, you can do the same thing by having vigorous sex. Seriously, for a med student you are woefully simple minded about the mechanistic reason for a soundbite suggestion.

Then again, the old adage holds true, P=MD, and $=MD in the Caribbean.

Look up Starting Strength Program, once you start losing weight, you'll be "skinny fat".
You need to add muscle weight and lifting low reps and heavy weight does that.
Also limit your carb intake, cut out all refined carbs and drink plenty of water.
Some of the posters here turned me onto the Starting Strength Program, it's the best thing I've done.

I said he could use an app which usually link to youtube videos or youtube like videos to show him how to do a workout. Also do you realize how many ways there are to injure yourself when workout? Taking advantage of the free trainer that alot of gyms offer to new members is a good idea to improve form. Yes a youtube video can tall you to lift with you legs when squating or deadlifting but it is not going to stand beside or beyond you and correct you if you are using your back or other bad form. According to a University of Arkansas study 1 in 4 exercise injuries are from bad form and there has been a 48% rise in gym injuries from 1990-2007. Would you start driving without a parent or instructor sitting in the passenger seat next to you? No, so why would you start lifting without someone teaching you.

This is wholly unnecessary for weight loss. You do not have to do cardio to lose weight.

You don't have to do it but it makes weight loss more effective. Moderate cardio per day on a treadmill or elliptical can burn anywhere from 250-500 calories in a 30 minute workout. You can do cardio everyday and not have a fear of overtraining or injury. Cardio also increase the effectiveness of the heart. 20 minutes of moderate cardio/ day or 150 minutes per week increase stroke volume (amount of blood pumped by the heart) and which lowers your resting heart rate. A lower resting heart rate reduces your eisk for heart attack (which for a 40 year old with young children probably wants to avoid). It also increase energy levels, helps control blood [glucose], improves blood flow. You don't do cardio for the weight loss you do cardio for the heart benefits and the weight loss effects are a nice benefit.

i didn't suggest he fast, I suggested he do if it fits your macros. Right now flexible dieting would be the easiest for him.

And breakfast isn't important. no more so than any other meal. You keep saying it is, but it isn't. I can eat a big meal the night before and it still wouldn't be digested by the time you wake up.

and anybody can fast just have to suck it up and get used to it for a couple of days.

jesus christ, i covered that in my very first post talking about any undisclosed illness.

but to answer your question if they build up to it, yes most can, maybe not all. and if you look up one of the benefits of IF you would see that controlled blood sugar levels & insulin levels are some of the benefits.

But by all means keep spewing your medical ignorance. You are a nurse you must know all.

High intensity high volume has the same effect of low intensity...and ALL intensities exhibited the insulin effect.
