I second the myfitnesspal app. Really makes you think twice about what you are eating when you have to log in every thing you eat. The app makes it very easy to log in your food btw.
Maybe look into getting a fitness band (microsoft band, Fitbit, etc). Those are perfect for people just starting out imo and can be used as a tool to motivate you. The ones with a heart rate monitor are gonna be better cause it can more accurately track calorie burn.

Buy an adjustable weight bench, a set of dumbbells, and a curved curl bar with some plates. Buy/Torrent BODY BEAST and follow the workout plan.
Drink a lot of water. Figure out your BMR and eat 500 cals less per day with a high percentage of protein to equal a pound of body weight per week. (I third MyFitnessPal app...makes the calculations simple)
Walk/Jog to get your hr up for a half hour 3 times a week to start.
Don't get retarded and try to Arnold Press 60lb dumbbells. Be smart. Start light and work on performing the simple exercises with good form. You don't need to join a gym. You can do this at home. Working for me. Losing fat and gaining muscle mass and strength for long term results.
Good luck. Deciding to start changing your lifestyle is the hardest part.

Dude,
Get $2,000 worth of cocaine, and a carton of camels.
If you live, you'll be shopping for new clothes. Nothing will fit.
Good luck.

I recommend it. On my second round of it. Got great results rather quickly. Didn't follow the diet exactly but was sure to get tons of protein, good carbs and some health fats which did fine for me.

For a total beginner, start with baby steps. Keep it simple at first. If you dive right in hardcore, you're more likely to fizzle out.
Start eating just 2/3 of what u would normally eat each meal. Start doing some cardio a few times a week and start a beginner weight lifting program. As u progress, start researching healthy foods, macronutrients and which foods are optimal for what u want to achieve. Reddit fitness is a great message board for learning about establishing a healthy diet and learning how to work out. It has a great mixture of beginners asking questions and knowledgable people answering them. I've worked out most of my life and still find good pointers on there.

don't run twice a day.
I found out the hard way... so far.
but then again, I don't use the treadmills at the gym for running either.
but that sounds smarter than pounding concrete.
stay dedicated and try not to just be satisfied after "a few good weeks"

Thanks to all for the serious responses.
For a quick background...I was always in decent shape. I played a ton of tennis my whole life. I was always around 6'0...165. Then, I hit 38 years old. We had our first child and then another a few years later. I was going to work earlier and staying at the office later. The quick and delicious Chicago deep dish slice was a regular in my lunch rotation. The quick couple of pints with coworkers after working a 12 hour day was easy to attend (usually accompanied with some bar food). I obviously have not been playing tennis since then.
It's amazing over the few years that my 31 wait went to a 36. My motivation is there. I just needed some extra help. Thanks guys. I never really was a gym guy and I could always eat what I want. I really do appreciate all the tips and help. Great board you have here.

I read that as you wanting to start Body Breast

Yeah, diet is key, and many of us did a lot of trial and error.

Get used to being hungry. Skip breakfast and don't make up for it later. It takes practice, but you just keep trying. Use a digital scale every morning. You won't lose much weight by exercising, especially walking. The help is miniscule. .earn about calories, weight, and walking. The math doesn't lie.

Breakfast is very important though. I wouldn't advise skipping it.
