What's sad is how wrong the information coming from a nurse and a med student is in this thread.
No wonder the country is fricking obese.

What workout routine do you use?
Posted on 6/11/15 at 10:44 am to lsunurse
no just annoyed that the general public turns to somebody like you for advice on these kinds of things, when its very apparent you don't know your arse from a whole in the wall when it comes to nutrition and exercise.
Oh and every time somebody like myself or cpt point out the stupidity y'all turn to medical books written in the 80 and 90s based on bad science from the 60s and 70s.

I told him a program to do. The apps are bullshite, find a great beginner program like greyskull, stronglifts, or starting strength and do what the program says. No app needed.
How are the apps bullshite? Just like anything else if you think they are the key then you are going to be diappointed, but they are agreat fitness tool. They let your track your workouts, give you pointer if you need, connect you to other lifters, and it is just more convient to keep track of you workout on your phone which most ppl are using for music anyway than to carry around a book or notebook a pen.

Jesus christ you went off the deepend here. On all these programs I suggested he would start lift and work up. and the muscle would push the fat out? really
Yes, it happens. When you are new to working out, you gain muscle mass faster than you burn fat (depending on workout of course). That actually makes you gain a pound or 2 which makes ppl freak out and quit. That is plenty of research that show that when you first start lifting weights you gain a pound or 2, and the inflammation muscle injury make you get bigger and heavier. If you stick with it you see a the muscle replace the fat. That is why experts say not to weigh yourself for the first few weeks of working out. Ppl weigh themselves after a week or two of working out and have gained a pound and they freak out and quit. It is usually around the 4 week period that fat loss over takes muscle gain.
Will address the rest of the points later.

Mainly just saying not to skip because it could throw off his diet for the day and cause him to eat more later on, since he is trying to eat better. I'm not saying he needs to be eating a huge breakfast either.
If anything a fast will help him be able eat larger meals in the afternoon and into the evening to keep him feeling full.
There's nothing that will make a person trying to lose binge more than someone who breaks down after limiting themselves to 300 calorie snacks all day for no reason.

Well I took nutrition 15 years ago in college and never claimed to be an expert AT ALL. As a Peds nurse it's not like we are gonna be taught all the latest facts of EVERY SINGLE MEDICAL thing out there.
Yall are the morons who want to just assume and take every post I make to mean more than others just because I'm a nurse(when many times I'm just posting like everyone else in the thread). A pediatric nurse who has never cared for adults. I only said not to skip breakfast cause my personal trainer told me that and every general article on weight loss in magazines/books says the same thing

Your trainer?
oh and weightloss books/magazines wont sell anymore if you succeed.
congrats.

well you should find a new trainer, yours is stupid. Also most of the magazines are trying to sell supplements.

Losing 2lbs a week isn't awful...especially if he's trying to cut 20-30 lbs
And it doesn't sound like OP is trying to maintain any muscle

you werent wrong. 1k deficit is not that much. Hell if i eat 2k calories I am close to that. One can easily maintain muscle while eating 800 cals for a short time so long as you are doing it right.

At this point, he shouldn't even be concerned with the scale or his weight IMO. People suggesting 190 is a "good weight" for him and 180 is too skinny are just going to hamper his progress.
What I did after breaking my back in the Army and a 6 month layoff was fasted cardio nearly every day for about 3-4 months, which took off about 25 pounds. Then I started lifting again (mostly injury related). I was back to my lean, muscular self at 215 lbs within 1 year from restarting exercise.
This guy should be lifting too the whole time though. The best advice is go out there and learn for yourself--don't take anything anyone says at face value. Learn and apply, and search for information in different places. Consistency will be key.
