$15/ft for 6', dog ear wood fence installed. Not sure what you'll pay to have old one taken out.

Doing my own right now, 550' of fence. 2 1/2" galvanized sch40 post, 8' post hole at each post 80# bag of quikcrete at each post.

Ouch. That is a lot of money.

I have considered doing it myself but I don't know if I can keep the dog in for the several weekends it would take me to finish it.

Also, I do not want to be the one pulling those posts out.

BTW, I am in Baton Rouge.

Cut down the old fence and get it out of the way. Run a string along where the old fence was and mark your spots to dig 8 feet apart along the line. Dig the holes a foot and a half deep and level the poles against the string. Let sit for a day or two then run your 2x4s. Set out pickets and run a string along the top of them from one end to another. Bring down the string in spots that are too high if so.

For wood? You spent too much baw.

I'm in the middle of doing one around 400 feet, and am going to have $2500-$2700 in materials. Doing the work myself.

As said before, dont allow dirt to touch bottom. Also, when the new look starts to fade use some very light cedar stain...will prolong fence life by years.

What do you mean by don't allow dirt to touch bottom? Do you mean when installing the post, before concrete to prevent settlement?

posts or pickets should not be touching any dirt.setting posts should be..dig hole close to 2' deep, pour small amount of dry mix in your hole before setting the post.

If you have used a contractor for anything recently, call and ask him nicely to let you order the materials from his lumber place using his discount (I just did this building a pole barn on my own and now I am in the supply company's system with the same discount my contractor gets)

Otherwise, make a materials list and call around to local lumber supply places and let them bid on it. Someone will make you a deal.

If you are going big box, go on ebay and get a Lowe's 10% off coupon (with an individual bar code) and you can use it at Home Depot as well.

We have horses and I have built many fences over the years. Good luck.

Not trying to hijack but I'm looking at a house that has a semi new 6ft fence. I'd like to convert to a 7-8 ft fence if I install a pool. Do I need to replace all components or just the actual fence boards.

You could do some fancy lattice work on top of fence. The 4x4s are not high enough to support the extra 2ft in fence boards. You won't be able to get your runners high enough. You can do it but over time your fence boards will warp at the ends because of no support.

I've got the same problem as the OP. I need to replace an old rotting 60-foot section of old, 6' rotting wood fence. I don't mind doing demolition, but need the job done pretty quickly to keep a dog in back yard.

I've purchased materials because I had a Lowe's gift card. Got one bid (labor only) and it was $1150. Over $19 / linear foot for labor only blew me away. I was expecting about half of that.

Any reputable fence companies in BR that the OT ranters would recommend?

Also, not sure you would need an auger being that you are tearing a fence as well. But, if you need an auger I would rent THIS ONE.. Best $100 you will ever spend.

Definitely rent one. I've had to dig the holes with a regular post hole digger and it's a huge pain in the arse, especially with all of the clay we have around here.

Did they guy who had someone do a shitty job on his fence ever come back and update his thread? It was a fairly long thread a couple weeks ago.
