A woman in China was recently diagnosed with a rare hearing-loss condition that prevents her from hearing men’s voices.

The woman, identified only as Chen, recently woke up one morning and was unable to hear her boyfriend’s voice, the Daily Mail reported. The Xiamen resident then rushed to the Qianpu Hospital hoping doctors there would be able to help her.

Chen was subsequently diagnosed by an ear, nose and throat specialist with a condition called reverse-slope hearing loss, or RSHL. And it’s rare: According to Tennessee's Thigpen Hearing Center, “for every 12,000 cases of hearing loss, only one person has RSHL.” In the U.S. and Canada, specifically, the condition affects roughly 3,000 people.

Those with the condition typically have trouble hearing low-frequency sounds.

The condition is typically caused by genetics, according to the hearing center, though it noted other factors can also lead to RSHL.

Chen reportedly said she has recently been under a lot of stress and not getting an adequate amount of sleep, which Xiaoqing said could have been a contributing factor. The night before she was unable to hear her boyfriend’s voice, Chen also said she felt nauseous and had ringing in her ears.

She's reportedly expected to fully recover.

Would have been evolutionary if men encountered same issue. One can always hope.

I need to get a doctor to diagnose me (as a man) with the inverse of that diagnosis so I can blame my “medical condition” when my wife gets angry with me for not listening to her.

She’s a victim of a sonic attack.

How much bitching did she do at her boyfriend blaming it on his voice instead of her ears?

There is plenty of research that men process women's voices using the same centers of the brain used to process things like music (as opposed to male voices, which we process as information).

So, we (generally) like women's voices, can hear them, but have to work really hard to extract information out of them.

Science bitches.

This might be true because I know sometimes when I'm at a red light and I'm trying to get a woman's attention for whatever reason she looks straight ahead

What if the voice is that of a man who identifies as a woman? Voices are bigots!

years ago, in some airplanes, a woman's voice was used for some of the automated aural callouts, studies over time revealed that in high stress/workload scenarios, male pilots would tune out the warnings when trying to address the no normal situation(s))
