They cut corners on hygiene on purpose, to save money.
All accidents are preventable, BP Texas City, Macondo, pick your mining disaster, etc. are the results of deliberate decisions to put short term finances over safety. Or just sheer greed and stupidity, take your pick.
I’m not defending this idiot, but I think the hysteria is overblown. Teenagers have been doing disgusting things in fast food restaurants for decades..

A lot of people forget the deaths caused by Tylenol product tampering.
There is a simple reason why the punishment is so severe. The public demands severe punishment when public health is jeopardized.
Imagine 7 deaths after consuming Blue Bell ice cream and then 3 more deaths in other cities due to copy cats.
This really happened with tylenol and is exactly why we have strict punishments.
