A California woman was gored by a bison at Yellowstone National Park, after she approached the animal while attempting to take a photo.

The 72-year-old unnamed woman got within 10 feet of the bison “multiple times” while at her Bridge Bay Campground to take photos before it attacked, the National Park Services wrote in a press release.

The woman sustained “multiple goring wounds” and received immediate medical attention from park rangers before being flown to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center for further care.

The park is currently investigating, but Yellowstone’s senior bison biologist Chris Geremia is warning guests to “stay at least 25 yards away” from the wildlife, and to move, run away or find cover if they approach or charge.

“The series of events that led to the goring suggest the bison was threatened by being repeatedly approached to within 10 feet,” said Geremia in a press release. “Bison are wild animals that respond to threats by displaying aggressive behaviors like pawing the ground, snorting, bobbing their head, bellowing, and raising their tail.

You know what they say, "frick with the bison, get the horns."

I was at Yellowstone last year. People have lost their minds. I saw numerous people (particularly Chinese) who would RUN up to the animals to try to take pictures. It was ridiculous.

Poor lady came down with the Covid.

What an idiot, wish there was video. I see this every time I am in a park with large animals be they buffalo, elk, whatever. People always think they can get closer than they should.

I feel for park rangers at places like Yellowstone. They have to deal with some of the biggest idiots on the planet on a regular basis.

I think this is pretty common at Yellowstone. People don't realize that the wild animals are wild. Bison are fricking huge. 25 yards would be too close for me unless I was in some kind of platform or protected area.

I'll never understand why these people get so brave around wild animals. Do they think that because they're in a national park that they have somehow been tamed?

I would say that is unfortunate, but she's already past her breeding years, so the damage is already done.

That's the main reason I don't like the metric system. When you give people different units it can get mixed up easily. Just keep everything in feet and miles and some of these mistakes could be avoided. May have even saved a life in this instance.

She's 72. If you die after having children you can't be a Darwin award winner.

It's almost always people who are from places that don't have to deal with wild animals. They just don't know any better and don't listen to the instructions or take them seriously.
