WNBA Could Go Into A Lockout With Players Seeking More Money Despite League Losing $40 Million This Season

Just like anyone else in every profession, WNBA players want more money. What makes their situation different from ‘Jim The Accountant' is that they have a player's union that not only represents them but one that may be willing to go into a lockout if certain wants are not met.

On Monday, the WNBA Player's Association (WNBPA) made its first expected move and nixed its current collective bargaining agreement (CBA) with the league in hopes of receiving a larger slice of the pie.

"The players made the decision to opt out of the last CBA to realign the business and save the league from its own limitations," Player's Association executive director Terri Jackson said in a statement.

While opting out of a CBA seems like a dramatic move that would immediately enter things into a lockout period, that isn't the case. The current CBA will still be in effect for the 2025 season and the league and Player's Association now have a year to come to an agreement.

It's that agreement not coming to fruition that could start a lockout following the 2025 campaign.

I might actually watch if they replaced them with regular chicks playing ball.

Imagine them doing this lockout though. They are coming off literally their best/most popular season of all time (and still a total money loser ), and then they would essentially ruin it all by choosing to do this shite. And all while the league continues to hemorrhage money.

A WNBA lockout would be beyond hilarious.

Oh the irony, when there’s quite literally a single player that is egregiously underpaid, ($74k /year, while generating many millions of dollars in value) yet it still lead to a $40m deficit.

Imagine how much more they would’ve lost if not for the extra revenue generated by CC

Finally get a talented, likable, and marketable superstar to be the face of your league…then promptly allow the rest of the inmates to overrun the asylum.

Dare I say, air ball?

Nice. Just when viewership was peeking out of the cellar and maybe there was a little interest.

Way to shoot yourselves in the dick you identify as having....

The WNBA brass need to consider the unintended consequences. Whatever fills that Summer TV void will be better than the WNBA and the few fans they have will not return.

I hope it's beach volleyball.

So typical of this generation. Good luck to them but it will not change my life one bit either way.

I wish they’d tell the WNBA to kick rocks already. But we have to keep playing pretend so we don’t hurt women’s feelings

Replace it with the TransWNBA.

One league could be male to female and the other female to male.

The winner of each league competes in a battle of the genders.

Why pay them anything if the league is such a money loser?
