Do these go away without a union? I'm being serious. Are we at risk of falling back 50+ years?

Because of the risk of doxxing all I can say is yes. I do have a specific example though.

Pensions are mostly gone, for practical reasons they are gone. No way I would list one, as the GM union employees that are so chastised found out.

If you think total compensation is what is important to the current generation coming into the workforce....wow.

But yes, to a certain extent the bottom sets the market for the upper, not the other way around.

With the mobility of workers and the ability to share information there's no way.

What is then... I can't wait for this one.

Jesus I hope you aren't upper management trying to communicate with millennials.

Answer the question, what motivates young workers if not total compensation?

I think the current generation is more concerned with the total package far more than they are some hourly rate. I'm talking everything from insurance and retirement plans to flex schedules and other programs.

Achievement. It trumps almost any kind of compenaation. Especially if they are being compensated in a competitive manner.

It is actually interesting to see the 3 generations and their philosophies. Maybe the millenials aren't as deep in their careers and it will change.

The flex schedules and off time do seem to be right up there as well. I have seen several take a large paycut and demotion for 9/9's

What a joke. By the way every study and survey says you are dead wrong.

Again, only basing off what I have seen and not what I have read.

When I was tied to a cubicle 8 hours a day I wondered the same thing. Now I have the freedom to work however long and whenever and wherever I want to work but the earning potential is far greater so I work much more than 40 hours a week now. It's kind of a double edged sword but I like where I am right now

40 hour a week wth is that. I am lucky to get a day off once every 2 months.

You’re still trading hours for dollars

I spent 19 hours at “work” this week and made 14k. The rest of the time I spent working on ancillary projects and calling or texting customers to build and maintain relationships

Unions and excessive government regs stifle economic growth in this country.

I strongly disagree that unions are the shite. Just wanted you to know that many places in and around the country were built by union labor. Mercedes Benz Superdome,Tiger Stadium,OLOL hospital, the new Children's hospital is being built right now. Oh we can't forget River Bend Nuclear power plant that helps keep your arse cool this summer. Yes unions still have a place in the workforce today.

Tell yourself whatever you like to sleep better, but union wages are keeping up with inflation. Meaning they aren't overpaid, they are paid accordingly.

Union labor productivity rate in industry hovers around 25%.

Funny. I’ve had conversations with people in corporate roles that are discovering a new problem. Now that pensions are being eliminated, they are having a hard time retaining experienced employees. It’s like high performing people have no real tangible incentive to stay with the company.

It's a huge waste of time. I used to have a 7-3 job, and I was done my actual work around 9-10 every day. They only needed me there for 10 minutes here and there later in the day, and that was work that could've easily been done the next morning.

I spent most of the day dicking around on the internet, smoking cigs, driving around heavy equipment, and finding new spots to sleep.

Being at work while doing nothing is the worst. Just let me go home when I'm done if I'm so much more efficient than the last person

This is pretty much me except I work 6:30-5 M-F. I hate when I have nothing to do because I get bored but want to be doing something.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. Union labor is used all the time. It doesn't mean unions are necessary.
