He dismissed my point of view 2 pages ago. I have sat in this meeting before. Better to let it go.

For tradesmen, journeymen yes. They're past their prime in every other sector

Seems to me you've been backed into defeat. State your case.

You already said you were good. You didn't want to worry about having to actually challenge your opinion.

You said to keep on thinking that way. I told you it's worked out so far.

Yeah, unions are great for 50% of workers. Of course they're still useful for that 50%.

Honestly think the engineering field could benefit, but only in the entry level. The benefits of OJT that unions used to provide is sorely missed.

Unfortunately the advent of modern HR has neutered unions and made thier greatest asset a liability.

I get the feeling your biggest benefit to being in a union is them having your back? That seems to be your argument, right?

'having your back' is a broad stroke. That could apply to many things.

Benefits of being in a union and having unions are totally different benefits.

40 hour a week wth is that. I am lucky to get a day off once every 2 months.

People work what they want to live the lifestyle they choose. I work about 37 a week for 40 weeks. I value my time much more than I did 15 years ago

Maybe I'm not capable of understanding, but I don't see any case you've laid out for unions.

Same here. I can't fault people chasing the dollar, did it. It is cliche to say you can't put a price on time with your family, but I hope my regrets in that area are small when I get older.

My Union is the best thing that ever happened to me. Cheap insurance to have with all the shady stuff that could go on in corporate.

Who decided 40 hours was the standard? We should be working more

It isn't a simple statment that gives you an ah-ha moment. It is long and drawn out, and more than I would go on to here because of doxxing mf'ers. I still enjoy protection of a union despite not being a member of one when it comes to safety, retirement, compensation, etc.

Because people think unions are outdated.

have to give the unions credit where credit is due...they fricked up Detroit so badly, that we got a lot of sweet auto manufacturing jobs here in the South...

Tell it to the workers at the GM plant and all the outlining suppliers in Shreveport that list there jobs because it was cheaper to close down their plant instead of paying someone $30+ an hr to sit on a stool and push together 2 pieces of plastic.

Before u say anything I had family in that plant and people I know in the outlining plants that list their jobs.

The union didn’t magically pull money out their coffers to pay their bills and help them out... guess what it’s hard to find a job in Shreveport making $15 hr to $20 hr.

This is directed at those that say unions are the best thing since sliced bread. Yeah back in the mafia/gangster days but now they are outdated. The best workers should work and make the $$$$.

Do these go away without a union? I'm being serious. Are we at risk of falling back 50+ years?

I know pensions have fallen out of flavor, but much of that is due to the incredibly high cost associated with lower rates. Most pensions aren't fully funded anyway. Good companies and good employees know the value of total compensation rather than simple wages. Are we going to forget that without unions?

They closed that plant because GM was making wildly inefficient baby hummers there.

The federal government made them do away with lines that weren't making money. The mini-hummers fell in to that.

GM expanded beyond their means.

I know some tradesmen, mostly commercial construction that benefit from unions but they are journeymen who are basically hired out of the union hall. It's definitely still valid for them. They don't work for one company, necessarily
