The BLS records about 80,000 items each month by calling or visiting retail stores, service establishments (such as cable providers, airlines, car and truck rental agencies), rental units and doctors’ offices across the country in order to get the best outlook for the CPI.

So I know that they try to compare apples to apples over the short term. I just don’t understand how they account for improved quality of goods and services over the long term (10-20+ years).

If someone, who is non-union, is fired for being lazy or non-productive there should be a paper trail. In the manner of bad reviews or coaching sessions.

Reviews and coaching sessions are the bureaucratic tape for non-union employees.

Sorry I have a different opinion based in experience (on both sides of the subject) rather than reading about it online.

They sample what people are actually buying. They have random folks who fill out diaries and whatnot to keep track of it. Similar to Nielsen in that respect.

If people are buying phones today, they're included in CPI today. It's a consumption measurement.

That's fine as long as it's informed.

Being a union worker that has no idea how the union actually works at its macro processes doesn't exactly make you an expert. Much less so that studies its and other economic impact.

Actually just found an interesting article on Forbes about this subject. LINK

quote:

As we can see we can make almost any result we like depending upon which inflation rate we use. It’s true that even with the correct (and most favourable) one compensation hasn’t risen as fast as productivity. But then we’re already agreeing that if it didn’t then the labour share of GDP would change and we have seen a change in labour share of GDP. But the size of that change is consistent with a little bit of a lag, not some complete disconnection as the EPI would have it.

quote:

That is, the quality of goods has gotten higher faster than we all assume. Which means that our real incomes, what we can actually consume from our total compensation, has risen more than we all assume. And this paper is insisting that the effect is large enough that I am entirely happy to start insisting that wages have risen faster than productivity in recent decades. And all because we’ve been over-estimating the inflation rate.

Thought I was better leaving, may or may not be.

My job is a lot more secure without being a member of a union. My base is higher than my union counterparts in the same job. I get a lot more vacation.

There are some downsides to not being union, the main is not having a free 'day in court'
