I’m fine being behind people. You’re going to be behind people at a parade. The issue is that you’re not just behind people but you are also behind all the BS they decided to set up in front of the parade. And then they want to act like they own the entire space. But if you’re one of those grown children, then good for you baw.

What's hilarious is that absolutely nothing would stop this guy from being in teh front on the sidewalk side if he chose to do it. But I guess that's not good enough.

Just move the chairs out of the way if there's no one in them?

That's what I always do and it seems to work out fine.

He's just mad he can't have his own space to set up without putting in the tiniest bit of effort, he's not looking for actual solutions

Imagine being a grown arse man staking claim to a piece of government owned grass in order to have a better chance at catching Chinese made plastic trinkets

It literally was just like that for a hundred years until a bunch of dumbasses started a territory war.

What has made this worse is that all (except Endymion) take the St Charles route now.

To really fix this, all the parades should go back to their original routes which meandered all over the City. People would then have to move their shite to go catch parades at different locations - was a lot of fun to do. Plus, this would help business in those parts of the City too.

This is why we go to Metairie parades. Follow parade tracker app. Leave house about 1/2 hr before the parade will arrive where we plan to view it. Drive a few mins and park a few blocks away. Watch parade and kids catch plenty of stuff. Mad Hatters parade actually throws toothbrushes and toothpaste which is great. Leave when parade is over and be home in less than 15 minutes with a years supply of dental hygiene products.

Used to be something I just worked around. No biggie. But I agree that it has gotten way out of control. The elaborateness of some of these set ups makes me SMH.

It is a bit annoying having to maneuver around 300 sqft set ups with not a single person in them. I was at the saturday parades last year and there was a giant 3 tent set up next to where we were posted up and I think I saw 5 people in it for a total of about 15 minutes for the 2.5 hours I was there.

It’s not insane to expect people to not block up the entire parade route with tents and ladders and chained together chairs that no one is sitting in.

This is my thing. If you want to hold down a spot at least be at the spot.

first come first serve
the ones that just walk up right before parade looking to set up right in front of you is pretty weak especially when you've been out there all day

Doesn't sound like something a milk crate of molotov cocktails couldn't fix.

They used to keep the street car tracks clear and street cars running when parades weren't going, and only allow people to set up in the neutral ground a couple of hours before parade time.

I wish they would go back to doing that.

For RTA even 15 or so years ago this was the case, it worked great. But everyone complained about having to move their stuff so people could get to work/home before the parades start, and after. City caved, first told RTA they couldn't run streetcars closer than 2 hours before parades, now its 4 hours and entire line is shutdown from next Thursday-Wednesday.

Running streetcars overnight after parades would solve a lot of this.

Just because you were too lazy to get there earlier does not make my setup a bad thing. Take some initiative and stake your claim like a man, and quit crying

lol most of the people “claiming” the neutral ground don’t even pay property taxes in Orleans parish.

A couple of years ago I got to the route three hours early and there was a big ole tarp and some chairs sitting there unoccupied. I looked at that prime spot sitting there empty up until an hour before the parade at which time I pulled the tarp up, folded the chairs and moved that shite to the back of the neutral ground. People filled in the spot.

30 minutes later (half hour before parade start) lady shows up raising hell and yelling about who "moved her stuff." I told her it was me and she went ballistic. I looked over and a NOPD Sergeant locked eyes with me, rolled his eyes and sauntered over. I looked at her and pointed at the Sergeant. She sucked in her breath and started out "HE'S IN MY SPOT..." Before she could go any further the NOPD guys said "Mam, he is standing on a public space in the City of New Orleans. That is not your spot. Is there anything else I can help you with?" And then walked away.

She stormed off. It was oddly satisfying although I spent the rest of the parade waiting for that crazy bitch to come stick a butcher knife in my back.

This x1000

It’s absurd. Use to be ladders for kids. But everyone has one. Ok. Now there’s tarps. Taking up a bedroom.
