Will home owners get screwed?

How does the hurricane deductible work?
Everything I am seeing does not show any sustained winds close to hurricane level.
How can the NWS call it a hurricane?
I am pretty sure everyone's hurricane deductible is much higher than the standard deductibles.

Probably Jim donelan telling the weathermen to declare it a hurricane. Protecting the insurance companies

Because there is sustained hurricane force winds.

Because you aren’t a trained professional and have no idea what you are talking about.

Yes. All those trees that the power companies have not trimmed will be trimmed now and you get to pay for it in a hurricane surcharge

Most policies say "named storm" not hurricane. Now if you didn't buy flood insurance, the only person who screwed you is....you.

It's not a hurricane deductible. It's a named storm deductible so the moment we had a TS, it kicked in

A few years back there was no hurricane deductible, I think it changed about 20 years ago. Just wondering if they designate these storms as hurricanes prematurely to help out the insurance companies.

Has anyone ever had a pleasant or even fair experience with insurance?

Dear lord.
Hurricane classification has nothing to do with it.

Yep...you figured it out!!!
The National Weather Service is in bed with the insurance companies and have been for 20 years. They get kickbacks from the insurance companies and the NWS prematurely calls these “storms” hurricanes. I hope you have a safe room because their agents are tracking this thread and will be at your home shortly.
Stay safe baw

there are policies that have named storm deductibles and some that have hurricane deductibles. In this case, either would apply. If Barry would have made landfall as a tropical storm, only named storm deductible would apply, not the hurricane deductible

Like any of this matters. My friend still hasn’t received her insurance payout from 3 years ago.

I’ve got safeco. We flooded from a busted line and they have made us whole and then some. Put us up in a hotel and then a nice apt. Gave us the money we needed to fix everything up right and replace damaged items.
They made it as painless as possible

1-5% of what your Coverage A (dwelling) is insured for is a general range. $300k house, $3k-15k deductible depending on carrier and what policy you wanted. You have some say so in it... If you wanted the cheapest premiums you could get and elected higher deductibles, your gonna be paying for it now. If it’s all rising water, hope you have flood insurance.
Don’t try and get it after the fact. There is a 30 day waiting period before those policies are active once they are established.

Totally. They go into the storm's "settings" tab and up the max sustained winds to 74 mph.

I own a restoration company, so I generate millions in revenue every year from insurance companies. They can be a pain, but I’m quite fond of them. You just have to know how to handle the estimating situation. I would suggest anyone with damage always have a contractor or public adjuster (depending on state) involved. The pricing software we use in the industry is (Xactimate) is easy to manipulate and write low estimates. It’s also easy to build an estimate the right way and there is plenty of money. You want someone who understands the software or you can get shorted pretty easily. Most restoration companies pay for the license.

Most insurance policies have a named storm deductible, not a hurricane deductible

Tell your insurance provider you want a flat deductible. I don’t have a named storm deductible in my policy on purpose. No sense dealing with that 2 or 3 or whatever percent because the storm got a name.
