Is control burning rainforests a thing?
Along the south and southwest side, it is tinderbox dry this time of year and the first time there, I thought the place looked like New Mexico on the Mauka side.

Genuinely asking
One problem is that we have taken land/fire management out of the hands of Native people/tribes. They spent generations managing the land with fire. They know more about doing this than probably any other entity. That has been curbed significantly over the decades. Thankfully, there is a movement to bring those folks back into the fold in areas across the country.

I use to work off Front and much surrounding that building is in flames.
Friends and family there and not getting any response.

There’s a valley on the east side of Maui that’s one of, if not the, rainiest places on earth. The west side is more desert-like.
Incredible that Lahaina and Front St. are having wildfires though. Unbelievable.

I just read a tweet....errr....an X that said the fire took out the internet, and because all police and fire radio channels are encrypted they aren't working, either.

they have a ton of hotels north of Lahaina, some of the bigger chains
The Wife and I stayed at the Hyatt Regency Maui resort right there in February 2022 for our 30th wedding anniversary. We loved that place. Would like to go again at some point.

Must be impacting phones significantly as well. The State has told people on the West side of the island to text 9011 instead of call for emergency assistance.

Calling always takes a hit with disasters. Towers may have been damaged or are just overwhelmed. Texts usually get through when the calls won't.

I assume you saw the penguins.

Maybe look at some of the resorts north of Kaanapali, like Kapalua? I know there is a Ritz up there at least, and lots of rental properties. I don't think those areas are being impacted at this time.
We’re looking into it, but pricing right now is good bit higher than when we booked 7 months ago. We were actually staying at the ritz just north of Lahiana for a couple days.
One concern is everyone will be looking elsewhere, overcrowding may be an issue.
I think we’re just gonna take our time and rebook… still really bummed, but at least we weren’t there.

They also had several bird exhibits there when we went. Part of some special event they were doing. That is a nice hotel/resort. Drums of the Pacific Luau was also great. We actually could see it from our room as well.
Have you been there? February is a great time to see whales, as well. we went on a whale-watching tour, too.
The banyan trees were pretty amazing, too, but I am afraid a lot of those will be lost in those fires.

I got a pic from a friend in Kula, taken from the air from over the ocean, looks like the whole square is gone, for the pic it looks like the old courthouse by the square is a shell

Hate to see it. Honeymooners at Hyatt on Kaanapali Beach in '93. Spent a lot of time in Lahaina chilling out and taking in the sights. I wonder if Greg Brady taking the tiki figure had anything to do with this.
