When did they quit calling them typhoons?

Probably when they standardized things in the Western Henisphere.

Ah. For some reason I thought if it was in the Pacific, it was a typhoon.

Eastern Pacific: Hurricane

Western Pacific: Typhoon

Indian Ocean: Cyclone

In all seriousness Maui is awesome and I hate seeing this but just like in CA they don't seem to clear out underbrush.

Not just that, it has proven incredibly difficult for them to compile accurate data and information to even form an adequate wildfire prevention plan. Pretty much all of the fire services over there operate independently and after-action reports are an afterthought most of the time. Wildland and wildfire mapping is incredibly difficult and lacking. They've begun working to correct some of those issues, but it has been a slow go.

Fires were rare in Hawaii and on other tropical islands before humans arrived, and native ecosystems evolved without them.

I thought this same thing. We were there in February for our honeymoon and I've been trying to piece together where all the damage is going down. Based on pictures that I've seen of the harbor....I can't believe the tree is still there.

was parked under that tree many years ago, my gf and I were meeting a couple from work that was on their honeymoon, we had made a big beer can string and attached it to their car and tucked it under the car out of sight so that it would unfurl as they drove off, when we got back out we found out that some industrious homeless person spotted the beer cans and took them

The TB horse I rode as a kid was from the Parker Ranch on the Big Island, and was named Lahaina Lassie.

I prefer it to the original album version on Hotel California, for sure. Some of Henley's best lyrics.
