Wildfire Cause Discovered - Electrocuted Birds Bursting into Flames

Electrocuted, flaming bird carcasses are falling off of power lines and causing wildfires across the U.S. This surprisingly common phenomenon has been responsible for at least three Colorado wildfires so far this summer.

These events are not isolated. A 2022 study found that electrocuted birds caused 44 wildfires in the contiguous United States between 2014 and 2018. That study was led by Taylor Barnes, a biologist who now works for electric utility company EDM International. In the paper, Barnes wrote that “avian-caused ignitions” happen when a bird sits on an overhead power line. For reasons that can vary from case to case, sometimes the bird receives a powerful electrical shock, setting its feathers on fire. The dead or dying bird then falls, and, on occasion, lands in some brush or other flammable material.

On July 13, a fire in Colorado’s Arapahoe County that destroyed a home and a dozen outbuildings appeared to be caused by one such flaming avian. The Denver Post reported that more than 1,100 acres were burned in the blaze. Barnes said one possible reason the bird burst into flames was that it was looking for a snack inside an arrester cap. “Sometimes what can happen is insects can get inside that cap,” he told 9News. “That attracts birds. Birds like to eat insects, in particular woodpeckers and crows, so something like that could have sat on the jumper wire and pecked into that arrester cap trying to get to the insects, making contact with the energized components and then causing it to catch fire.”

This is BS just like the "sparking power lines" explanation of a few years ago. It's just easier to extract big money from PG&E than from stupid hippy campers or wackjob arsonists.

Common denominator there appears to be the snake...does a snake conduct more electricity than a bird? Why does a bird land on a powerline, hunt a snake for who knows how long, capture it and return to said powerline, THEN combust? I'm not saying that's how it happened, but I'm sure those birds were familiar with their respective powerlines.

There are real birds but they can't be electrocuted by power lines. There has to be metal in the bird.

If the snake is in contact with one line while the bird is in contact with another it will arc.

Dude, frick PG&E. They've had wildfire mitigation violations for decades. They deserve every big money extraction they get

that is wild.
One of our office AC units went out last week, and I suspect that its because frogs and lizards are getting annihilated by the fan and falling into it. There are dead frogs all long the top of the units. I walked out there yesterday and I heard a thump thump thump thump and saw a lizard in there getting pummeled to death by the blades and then it flew out the top. Its like a lizard and frog graveyard in there.

So it's the snake's fault. Not surprised.

We had something similar happen at the substation on our ranch and it burned about 100 acres. I think the final root cause was a snake that crossed the lines and it blew a combiner and the sparks lit the pasture up. We got lucky and caught it quickly because we just happened to be there and saw the smoke. If we hadn't been it could have been really bad.

Not so subtle brag.

Wasn’t meant to be. It’s a huge pain in the arse and if it weren’t for the wind and substations we would have had to sell it a long time ago.

True story time , in the 1970 period, union carbide was trying to start up at Taft La, and experienced a rash of short term power outages that generally occurred at early morning shutting down the major motors. A local cajun spotlighting lizards along the railroad tracks between Des Allamands and raceland noticed that when the 3 am train passed through, the egrets perched on the 230 kv power lines would lift off while taking a crap across the insulators causing serious sparking. LP&L fixed it by putting wire anti bird attachments above the insulators. Episode was written up in a couple IEEE papers in that period
