A North Carolina woman is suing Google after her husband died after driving off a collapsed bridge while following GPS directions, according to a lawsuit filed this week.
Philip Paxson died after driving off "an unmarked, unbarricaded collapsed bridge" on the night of Sept. 30, 2022, in Hickory, his widow, Alicia Paxson, said in the suit filed in Wake County on Tuesday.
Paxson was not aware the bridge had collapsed and was following GPS directions from Google, which had not been updated, the lawsuit says.
The suit, which alleges negligence, seeks a jury trial. It does not name a damage amount.
It named Alphabet, the parent company of Google, as well as three people who own or control the land on which the bridge on 24 Street Place NE sits.
A large section of the bridge, known as the Snow Creek Bridge, collapsed in 2013 and was never repaired, the lawsuit alleges.
Google Maps directed Paxson to take that route, the suit says, as he drove home on a rainy night from his 9-year-old daughter's birthday party and was killed.
He was the only one in the vehicle, a Jeep Gladiator. He had stayed late to help clean up after the party and his wife took their two daughters home in a different vehicle, the suit says.
The suit says that a woman had told Google that the bridge was out. That person in 2020 used a "suggest an edit" feature twice and was told in an emailed response that the matter was under review, the lawsuit alleges.
quote:
A Google spokesperson said the company's goal is to provide accurate directions.
"We have the deepest sympathies for the Paxson family. Our goal is to provide accurate routing information in Maps and we are reviewing this lawsuit," the spokesperson said in a statement early Thursday.

Mr. Paxson's partially submerged Jeep Gladiator the morning after the incident.

Seems she should sue the county/state/whoever. How is Google to blame for a bridge being out? It's not like their data is real time.

So someone suggested an edit 2 years before his accident? Seems the state or county should be sued for no barricade .

Is this kinda like suing a tire company because you flip your car when you blow a tire running over debris in the road?

It's been reported that they have been notified numerous times. The bridge washed out 9 years ago. This wasn't just a problem from a recent storm.

I don't see how Google is liable

It looks like she is going after the actual responsible people, but Google has money and the state has oversight. Both should be in the crosshairs.

Yeah it’s not like manufacturers ever produced defective tires or anything

Correct. Sue everyone and let them point fingers at each other. Should be a fun mediation day down the road

I have so many questions.
How bad are you with directions that you need GPS to bring home from 4 miles away after living there for 2 years?
How do they know that he did because GPS told him to? He could’ve done it as a way to commit suicide.
Why is Google maps bringing people on private property?
Who still uses google maps for GPS?
App map is superior

Agreed. That's why she's also suing the property owners.

I’m glad I use Apple Maps or that could have been me if I lived in that area.
In all seriousness I see the validity simply because of time and evidence of reporting over that time. The country is primarily at fault; however, I can see how in this specific case Google could be held civilly liable.

It’s a private road, it’s not the counties responsibility. It is the land owners. But at the same time, why is GPS directing people to private property?

What duty did Alphabet have to this guy?

You are aware there's an entire segment of mobile phones not produced by Apple right?
