Good for y'all. Remember, your only job as that little girl's dad is to make sure she does not end up on the stripper pole.

This is what I was thinking. I'm gen X and my two children are 5 and almost 2.

I have to admit my dad was a great man but he did work hard nearly 6 days a week and had to rest in the afternoons and Sundays.

He worked for his family when families only had one income coming in those days. Now both parents work so men do more at home to help the wife.

I'm 40 and my mom did all of the activities with us while my dad was working most of the time. I see all of our friends and co-workers sharing the parenting responsibility much more equally between mom and dad. Of course my mother was a stay at home mom while my wife is not. Seems to be more normal than it used to be.

There is a reason for this. Now both parents work, so its whoever finds time to get kids to their events.

Used to back in the day the woman didnt work. She stayed home all day, so when the dad got home from work he could sit back and relax on the couch while the mom took the kids to events and parent teacher meetings

Perhaps OP had a shitty father, but I think it's quite a generalization to say all fathers of a certain generation are bad. I think he's totally off base. Growing up, all my friends fathers spent huge amounts of time with their kids.

This is such a "pat me on the back" thread.

Although my dad was a good provider, this pretty much describes him to a tee. I don't remember my dad teaching me anything about life stuff in general whether it be sex, money, relationships, work related issues, etc. Everything that I've learned along the way, I learned by messing up and getting burned by it. This is a very hard way to learn about life. To this day, my dad isn't one who I feel comfortable calling and talk to about anything. I really don't have that strong of a relationship with any of my parents. Neither one of them actually go out of their way to spend time with my kids. If I don't physically bring my kids over to see them, they don't put forth any effort with trying to build a relationship with them. Although I would love for it to be different, it takes both parties to put forth effort for it to change. I can't force them do it.

I'm the complete opposite with my kids. I try my best to make every last one of their events. I sit and talk to them almost every night so that as they grow older they will be comfortable talking to me about anything. I just make sure that I'm present in every aspect of their life, not just as a provider like my father was to me.

Someone has some repressed daddy issues.

And if there was some drastic economic downturn, or terrorist act, todays shitty fathers haven't prepared their kids to survive

Throwing your ballet slippers at the bad guys isn't very effective, fyi

school stuff, like parent teacher conferences...i remember as a kid only the moms showing up. same for birthday parties, only the moms would go and dads would stay home sittin on the couch. and before you say that your dad was fantastic and did all this stuff.....yes im sure your dad was awesome, but i'm talking about the majority here.

Yeah my Baby Boomer Dad is great!

He didn't make me do any of that stupid shite.

My dad did all of that stuff for me. I didn't realize until a few years ago that what he did wasn't the norm

I don't think fathers going to pointless stuff like parent teacher conferences is a big deal.

When I was growing up, the only reason they would miss a game, recital, etc. was work (for the most part).
