Why is your average Joe marathon runner chubby?

I know 3 people that are all about that marathon life. They sort of fit the bill of the ‘finisher’ but still...that’s a ton of caloric burn jogging up to 30-40 miles per week. Yet, looking at them, you see your average 30lbs overweight IT guy/gal.
I went and watched the finish line at one of these recently and this seemed to be the average build. Of course the elite runners were in great shape, but why aren’t joe blow marathon runners more fit?
Help me, OT!

This is a damn good question. I maintain that they don’t actually complete them but spend the majority of the time talking about them all while making damn sure that you KNOW they are training for one.

They basically walk it while moving their arms like they’re running

They aren’t really burning that many calories and they eat terribly. Mostly because they think they need to “refuel” with sugary drinks and chews.

My SIL has completed 3 or 4 full ironman races and she is built quite solidly.

At a certain age, diet becomes more important than exercise in weight regulation.

This isn’t your average marathon runner.
This is your average marathon “finisher”.
And it’s because they don’t burn as many calories as they think walking 26.2 miles.

My snowflake SIL loves to run marathons and brag about it afterwards to EVERYONE she talks to.
She is about 5'5", probably 170lbs, and looks like she fell into a coma in 1983 and just woke up.

The average Joe is chubby to start with. It's more of a mental, determined, overcoming weakness type accomplishment. It's more physical than athletic if that makes sense. As long as you stay hydrated and keep putting one foot in front of the other you'll eventually finish.

A lot of the marathon people I know drink enough beer to cancel out the running calories

They go drink 1500 calories at Happys after every “training” run?

Isn’t that why most people work out?
To cancel out their food/drink intake?

Chubby is only a term applied to people after their umage being altered by advertisements and media.
Look at old pictures before all of that. Strong, fit guys are big and have strong cores and energy stores.

The real question is what is their finishing time? That will tell you a lot.

The people who finish marathons ln like 5 hours and act like it’s an accomplishment are huge losers

Pretty much. She will exercise every day, skip breakfast, eat a tiny lunch if any at all, then CHOW THE frick DOWN for dinner. She wonders why she won't lose more weight.

It’s because the number sticker looks awesome next to my 30A sticker.

I’m a “coach” for a 10k training program with the store I work at on the weekends. A lot of the people we pulled in this cycle are first timers or getting back in for the first time in a while. Most are pretty hefty folk. With the position I’m in I have to be positive and encouraging but most of them won’t get what they want out of the program because they won’t eat right. People think just because you’re going a few miles a day at 13:00/mile pace you’re going to shed 80 lbs and that ain’t how it works. To be at the point where you can pretty much eat what you want without adding weight you have to be going at minimum 60+ miles a week and prey you have a decent metabolism.
