Eh, I’ve heard this rationale offered up a million times, but honestly I can’t imagine going through life looking and feeling like shite (and knowing what society thinks of fat people).

Plus you can still have a reasonable amount of bacon as long as you compensate by getting off your arse once in a while.

There's three key reasons we're fat as frick.

1. Foods like fried chicken, bacon, sausage, biscuits, etc., are part of our culture and fast food restaurants are everywhere.

2. We have a lot of black people, who tend to be heavier.

3. The South is mostly boring in terms of outdoor activities. We lack the great national parks you see out west. We also don't have cities with mass transit that encourage at least some walking to get around.

Yes there’s nothin more boring than hunting, fishing, kayaking, water skiing, jet skiing, wake boarding, tennis, golf, baseball, football, etc.

I have been to every state, and I think southern states are boring - at least to me. I prefer great natural scenery and hiking, and the South doesn't offer much of interest in that regard.

I don't think you looked hard enough in that regard.

Is it Yosemite? No. But you're either lying or trolling to suggest that there isn't good natural scenery and hiking throughout the South.

Healthy food takes more effort than fast food drive through. It’s not necessarily about cost

Understood and agree. (That’s why hiking isn’t on my list). While there are areas of beauty in every state, the south can’t hold a candle to the mountain regions or Pacific coast.

And of course, the climate isn’t as conducive to hiking here as in other places.

I agree with what others are saying about the poverty levels. But I lived in Ohio for a year and realized that southern food is just so much better. Food up north (not just Ohio) doesn't have a lot of taste.

When I moved back home I put on 10 pounds in no time.

Our cuisine is the remnant of a heavily physical, agrarian lifestyle. If you eat the same shite, but replace hard labor with a generally sedentary lifestyle, you're going to get fat.

A pair of maternal great-grandparents of mine were dirt-poor sharecroppers, among other jobs. They ate heavy, heavy meals (usually at breakfast) every single day. They lived to 93 and 96, respectively, and were wire-thin.

Bull.

Their shopping carts are full of soda. Water is much cheaper.

Pork, potatoes, and rice are all cheap. Lunch meat is cheap. Bread is still cheap.
A healthy breakfast and lunch is given for free to poor children 75% of the year.

A family of 5 on SNAP gets $768 per month. That's plenty to be able to eat healthy.

The reality is that poor people are generally poor decision makers, and capitalism has produced an abundance of decisions to be made.

Another thing that ought impact the lack of hiking and outdoor activities is that the west is primarily federally owned land, meaning anyone can go on it. There isn’t that much public land in the south
