Baton Rouge is one big ghetto. Why do you think St George is a thing? Tiger land is just an extension of the metro

Pumping Station roast beef

I moved in with some guys who were Tiger Plaza residents and they always talked about Duple’s. Maybe it was owned by a student. That roast beef poboy wrapped in white butcher paper, lots of juice mixed with the mayo dripping off it….and I think it was $2.75.

My undergrad college had a ghetto immediately behind it. Friend hangs out his shirts and they are stolen from the clothesline. He was from Mineola, Texas and the shirts were Ralph Lauren polos and a few country club labeled polo shirts.

Two days after the theft, he's driving through the hood and sees a pick up basketball game - some of the guys were wearing his shirts. I can't remember if he did anything about it, I think he just took his lumps.

Frick. It was 4.99 when I lived on brightside.

$5.99 when I left school. I think it was still just $7.99 in 2019, but it really jumped up continuously after Covid.

"always" isn't the right word. The residential areas in the flood-risk bottoms between Magnolia Mound and the Natatorium corner of the LSU campus were tight little communities full of modest homes occupied by stable-family owners, mostly black. The neighborhood was the edge of once-vibrant Old South Baton Rouge. Lots of sad sights in BTR.

If you ever cut through the president’s streets ( during day only)…to avoid traffic you will see houses that resemble the garden district.. and actually some big ones..unfortunately you have to look past the abandoned car.. boarded up house next door etc… the school also is cool looking.. yes it was pretty nice once in its lifetime.. you can see similar buildings in town around the plants.. people left for various reasons..
flood … pollution.. white flight..

There are a few houses in the area off lsu .. somehow are very nice …..inside and outside.. and large..look like a garden district house .. seen them on Zillow… legacy real estate ????

We used to walk from the bars to our place on Alvin dark. All that ended in 2006 or so when we got mugged at 2am.

Yes you’re right. I walked through tigerland in a drunken haze at night plenty times with no worries about crime.

And then came Section 8 which did what it always does. Section 8 is the single most destructive government program on the books and nobody talks about it. Except for the democrats who want to EXPAND it even more.

It’s an embarrassment that this ghetto is allowed to exist right there by LSU.

When I lived in the tiger land area, it was run down but safe because it was full of college students.

I think Katrina killed Tigerland.

It was summertime when they started bussing those degenerates out of New Orleans and Tigerland was vacant due to summer vacation. Tigerland instantly filled with non-college students and it was history.

When I was a student, I lived in Tigerland. There was still the concept of the poor college kid eating Totinos pizzas and living in $350/mo apartments.

Tigerland was 95% college kids at the time. I think TOPS changed a lot of that. Demand for slummy apartments dropped, they turned Section 8 and here we are.

Someone needs to buy them all and bulldoze

I lived in Tigerland from 2010 to 2012 when it was really starting to get bad but I really had no choice as it was the place I could get a room for less $400 a month. It was convenient though, walking to Fred's was a positive and it was on a bus route. My complex was gated so nobody tried to break in my car.

In 2013, I upgraded to Burbank (back the it was called Burbank Commons and University Crescent) after making a bunch of money selling on Ebay.

This is right up there with the new Mississippi River bridge discussion.

I listened to my dad say this exact thing as we drove down Nicholson to LSU games in 1993.

Other than my truck getting broken into twice, nothing ever happened to me in the 2.5 years I lived on Alvin Dark (97-99). Unfortunately that shite happened a lot back then in the after market CD player days. I stumbled home many nights from Fred's.

I lived on State Street in 96 and finally upgraded to the apartments across from El Cid 99

The reason is simple, Baton Rouge keeps handing out building permits for new apartments without regard to infrastructure and demand for apartments. The result is that students then go live in the new apartments while the owners of the old apartments have no options other than Section 8 for rentals. Baton Rouge always leaves existing areas to blight while allowing new developments.
