It's a part of American professional culture that is fricking stupid. It's almost like there is a premium put on wasting time.

I personally hate this concept. I'm usually here before everyone else in my department, but it looks bad if I leave before everyone else. Most of the time it feels you only get credit for staying late and none for being an hour before everyone else even though hours end up about the same.

Yeah the hospital is so much about cutting costs right now. If you clock out even just one minute after a certain time you have to give a reason why you clocked out late. Clock in too early and you have to do the same.

Ex: I work 7 to 7:30 ...I cannot clock in before 6:53 and am late at 7:01; if I clock out at the end of my shift after 7:37...gotta write that up.

Ever thought about working federal?

Years ago, a co-worker would come to work at 7am and drink coffee and read newspaper til 8am. I would come in at 8 am and immediately start work. This guy was always held up as the "hard worker". He was not anywhere near top producer. boss was an idiot.

I'm less than 2 years from being fully vested in AZ's state pension plan(my hospital used to be county affiliated and is grandfathered into the plan). That means whatever is in my retirement account on that day is instantly doubled and future contributions are 100% matched. I ain't going anywhere

It's a boomer carryover concept that's terrible.

I think this is definitely the case, and it may also be a gender thing. The first five years out of school, I had 2 different jobs. The first one had an average age of mid to late 30s and was probably 65% female. The second job had an average age of 25 and was 80% male. The first job had a ton of women gossiping about who left at 5 and who stayed late. The second one was nowhere close to that. Most people worked from home a day out of the week. Nobody cared if/when you came in as long as you made your clients happy getting work done. It was such a better environment.

The difference could have also been the field. The first was benefits consulting while the second was more of a tech job.

Any company that values butt in seat time over actual value creation is suspect and I would not want to work for them for 5 seconds.

Bunch of people in this thread without enough meaningful work to do.

Good luck this bonus season.

I'm in construction, so there's a big time old school carryover of people that are "work above all else" attitudes. These people also have the hardest time understanding boundaries with cell phones/ email. I had a boss that would text me at 7 am on Sunday's looking for answers. A previous boss was sending me emails while I was at the hospital after our daughter was born looking for responses.

I wish I could work from home a couple of days a week. With our mobile office setup, I can do everything remotely that I can do at my desk. Hell I can do most of it on my iPad. Would be a huge deal not to have to drive into Baton Rouge every day.

It's simply about perception. People think being here before others and leaving after means they're working hard.

I get to work at like 6:30 and will be leaving just about now. Miss all the traffic, still have daylight when I leave and am still able to run some weekday errands without all the businesses being closed
This is my schedule and I love it. Even if I have to stay a bit later on some days, I'm still getting off at 5 at the latest.

Doubly bad are those who stick around late, then send the whole office a pointless email that could have been sent earlier in the day. Like a token "Look, I'm still here" email.

I get in earlier than most, so I leave earlier than most. Of course, unless it's an all hands on deck helpathon. Then I'm in to help. But I'm not staying here late to impress anybody.

I will never leave work between 5:10 and 5:45. I would rather sit at my office computer and surf TD than sit in BR traffic. If I stay till 5:45, I will get home within 5 minutes of if I would leave at 5:10-5:15.

prety much this. I changed my hours so that I would arrive right before my boss and leave right after him. Worked out great, although did frick with my schedule.

Now I work from home, and my boss has no idea when I work and when I don't.

Baby boomers. They're obsessed with 8 to 5.

Don't worry, they're all retiring and/or dying. Our generation is much more likely to give zero fricks if someone leaves at 5.

office cubicle fads are slowly but surely dying out. thank god.

I'm self-employed but I would think coming in early would be better than being around after five.
