re: Why is diet soda a huge vice for so many people?

It will not. Diet soda reduces sugar intake, but is linked to weight gain and metabolic disorders when consumed regularly. In quantity, daily users may beome addicted. Diet soda lacks any essential nutrients whatsoever, can impact on gut health and potentially poses diabetes risk. Aspartame is a common artificial sweetener in diet soda, which breaks down into methanol and formaldehyde, substances linked to cancer risk. Use has likewise been associated with cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, even dementia.

I agree. But there has been a case made that they can keep fat people fat.
Theoretically, there is an insulin response to drinking it, despite the zero calories and that can contribute to insulin resistance in obese people.
A person who consumes a lot of sugar daily (ie: obese person, typically) has a body that is already working overtime to try and process all the excess sugars.
When the diet soda is consumed and sweetness is detected, the body releases insulin as its anticipating more sugar to process - called cephalic phase insulin release. This happens when insulin is secreted into the plasma before blood glucose levels rise. The extra insulin can exacerbate insulin resistance in obese people.
I haven’t been following developments and discoveries with that but as with so many weight related things, healthy people who enjoy things in moderation and exercise are typically impacted minimally by diet sodas - outside of any adverse impacts caffeine may cause.
At the end of the day, obviously it’s better to not have sugar soda - but the argument is that, for an obese person, diet soda is still not a great alternative - just perhaps the lesser of two evils. But still bad.

we have studies showing that is not the case, lots of them

How so? Which components make it much worse for you? The lack of a ton of sugar and calories is bad for you I guess. Artificial sweetener health is controversial, so nothing proven there on their health effects, and nothing that harmful anyway..
So Coke Zero has no sugar or calories, Coke has a lot of sugar and calories. So how is Coke Zero much worse than Coke as you stated?

I prefer Coke Zero over everything on the market.

There are people that “need” coffee with cream and sugar every day.

I started my midlife healthier journey in April. When to zero sugar soft drinks. Better than the diet taste. "Zero Sugar" drinks typically aiming to more closely replicate the taste of the original beverage by using a combination of sweeteners, while "diet" drinks may prioritize a lighter taste with a single sweetener like aspartame. I've lost 20 lbs and love my zero sugar pops!

Disagree, I actually prefer the taste of Diet sodas. I know they aren't better for me. I'd still drink those if they had calories and regular soda did not.
I don't drink alcohol, I don't smoke. I don't like teas. Juice is just ok.
So other than water and coffee in the morning, I like a Diet Coke a few times a week for something else to drink to switch it up.

Yep same here. Regular sodas are sugary and disgusting

I used to have a client that drank Diet Coke like water, he was addicted to them. I remember going to his house for an interior remodeling and seeing cases of DC stacked up in his garage. He would talk to me holding a DC can like if it was beer lol.

Reading the comments and see the up and down votes answer the OP question of why diet drinks are such a huge vice for so many.

I'm not even sure what you're trying to say with this gibberish. OP is getting massive downvotes because he's an idiot and made a bunch of factually wrong claims. He's also doubled down throughout the thread while being condescending to boot.

Parents only ever had diet soda in the house when we were kids, so I guess I developed a taste for it. I actually can't stand regular coke / sodas and will take diet / zero sugar 100% of the time.
It's also a LOT less calories. I don't care about much else. I eat like shite and drink every day. Diet soda is the least of my problems.

What are your stats? Height, weight, bench, deadlift and squat #’s?

This is objectively untrue. Your body can take a calorie and do many different things with it, including converting it to fat, converting it to muscle, or even converting it to heat. Multiple factors including the makeup of the calorie itself influence the decision your body makes with regard to how it deal with the calorie.

Yep. It has been shown more often that they actually help people abstain from worse sweet cravings than if they didn't have them at all.
That's not to say that drinking them makes you healthier, but they are very useful in helping people stick to a healthier eating habit if they are prone to sweet cravings.

I drink water and black coffee. That's it except for when I'm at a nice restaurant, I might have a glass of wine or two.

Gotta be better than drinking the same amount of full sodas.
I had a Diet Mtn Dew kick for a while.
I also think there are people who just don't like the taste of water. I've gotten used to it and mostly drink water these days, though I di find myself slipping back to sweet tea now and again.
