I bought my truck because I pull a boat.

I got a crew cab because I had young kids at the time that I toted around.

I got A V8 because this is America baby and I ain't driving no 4cyl turbo.

I didn't get 4wd because I never go off-road other than to launch my boat.

I don't know where I fit in your data.

In the part for people who bought something appropriate for their use. The weakness in that data is it never presents how many people do none of those things, specifically tow or haul combined. It’s reasonable to assume there’s some overlap but it’s not absolute.

We have 2 diesel trucks. Both long wheelbase crew cab 4x4 3/4 tons. One pulls a horse trailer, so that ones needed. The other pulls the same feed trailer my 2wd Tacoma did for 15 years. Not needed but the hands like it so I relent.

Google it. I’ve seen the data from OEMs when I was managing fleets for O&G companies.

You really don’t know me. 80% of my income comes from O&G.

I fit that profile pretty close.

I doubt I tow more than 20% of the time, but typically use the bed @ least 50%.

A 1/2 ton work for me the majority of the time, but I like F-250s, and they hold value extremely well.

And lots of folks like 'em, which helps when you trade often.

Of all the shite thats involved with a modern diesels truck, the parts that skeet fertilizer into the tailpipe are by far the least intrusive.

What you SHOULD be mad about is ULSD, DPFs, and high pressure common rail fuel systems

Yep. I find it funny how much people get offended by that data here. It shows how much people enmesh their indentity and vehicle. I think us car guys might be more immune to being offended by it because we buy ludicrous shite and don’t worry about justifying it.

In total I have 3 trucks (4 if you count the one the hunters blackmailed me into buying), and SUV, EV and racecar. Only 3 of those are needed and all the other 4 are not only unnecessary but far more capable than needed.

Part of my job at one point at SLB was fleet management

I don’t recall a single field hand demanding a 3/4 ton

Obviously they needed 4WD and used it regularly

I worked at 2 big boys and a handful of smaller service companies. The melt I would get from trying to switch them just to gas burner 3/4 was amazing. And the ones I tried to put in a 1/2 would threaten to quit. It was almost as funny as the ops managers trying to justify it to keep the hands happy.

More threads bashing diesel and 3/4 ton trucks!

America has a problem with diesel for some reason. My 3/4 ton gets better fuel mileage than my half ton did, it's not that close either. Yeah I have to add def, yeah I might have some more expensive repair bills.

Cost of ownership between the 2 is pretty much even. It all balances out to be a few thousand difference over say 5 years of ownership, including initial purchase price and resale.

Small turbo diesels are huge in every country but the US for a reason, they are very efficient.

The most tired arse argument and all the points made on this forum are a bunch of O&G baws that only see the perspective of fleet vehicles for whatever job they do. Not the normal consumer, (my 3/4 isn't relegated to 10k GVWR like fleet vehicles).

Let me explain something to your ignorant arse. They make SUVs, light duty trucks, cars, etc with diesel engines that produces significantly higher fuel economy than gas burning engines. My wife has a diesel Yukon that get 26 to 28 mpg... same vehicle in gas is 20 mpg. OThey aren't just for large heavy duty trucks. If you bothered to research this you would know we should encourage the use of diesel engines vs saying something completely ignorant.

Who’s bashing diesels? I own 2 knowing full and well only one of them is needed. I also own 4 other cars I don’t even need. But I can be honest with myself without getting offended like the baws that wear their smoke rolling program on their sleeve.

Thank you for the straight answer…I wasn’t getting anything but “punditry-type” answers, which tells me that most have no idea what it does.

Incidentally, I used to be a diesel mechanic as well….but that was long before DEF was invented. I am curious…can you tell any difference in exhaust gasses when DEF is used and when it isn’t? For instance, does it smell different or is there an increase/decrease in tailpipe soot? Is there any difference in the used oil analysis?
