The Lake Charles area got hit hard by Hurricane Rita in '05 which probably is to blame for the stagnant population growth that appears between 2000 and 2010. After that, the growth begins again.
Ehh, the economy did pretty well after the hurricane. Many people from Cameron moved up to Calcasieu parish.

Why hasn't Lake Charles been able to keep up with the population growth of Lafayette?
Look to Midland/Odessa over the same time period. I'd imagine oil has everything to do with Lafayette's growth.

Where would you put them?
Wish they'd connect South College to South College Extension
ETA: And you could do it without affecting any neighborhoods

Every dollar in the Lafayette budget needs to go toward building at least two more river crossings.. It's asinine that there are 4 choke points in a city this size
It’s not a budget issue...it’s neighborhoods against through traffic. This argument has been going on since I was a kid (80s).

My Guess:
Hurricane Rita probably had something to do with it. If you notice between 2000 and 2010 LC population actually got smaller, Rita came and did the nasty to that city in 2005. I would imagine there were probably a lot of people who relocated, probably to Laffy in some cases.
ETA: Just realized that Boudreaux35 already said the same thing.

I lived in LC for a couple years back in 2001-03. Nice lakeside park and beautiful homes on the water. Other than that, it just seemed like every neighborhood was some flavorless, plastic glamour, cookiecutter built by DSLD

They crave the Lafayette culture enhanced by the surrounding areas. Ever heard of a Sulphur haircut? Neither has anyone else.

Ah i think they would need to move a cemetary to do that and it ain't happening. Spent 22 years in Laffy and don't miss it one damn bit. Ya'll can keep your traffic and joneses and i'll hit big lake after work for a limit of trout.

You also had Hurricane Ike in 2008 which did a ton of flooding damage in Calcasieu (including LC along the lake and rivers) and Cameron.

The one they announced is where I'd start... take south city parkway all the way out to at least Kaliste saloom, preferably to Vincent Road or maybe even Verot

I don’t know where you got your numbers but LC’s economy is booming compared to Lafayette.
LC lead the nation in GDP growth last year but what is happening currently will not lead to long term permanent population growth. The spec housing and rental markets are already cooling off.

Your link is correct. Laffy is shrinking some and that will only get worse as the oil field continues to struggle. The banks have some major foreclosure inventory coming up in that area meanwhile inventory is down year over year in LC.
Not saying LC will ever catch Laffy but the gap will narrow some more for the the next few years unless something drastic changes.
