Why hasn't Lake Charles been able to keep up with the population growth of Lafayette?

If those numbers are right, I'm pretty surprised Lake Charles has only grown by ~6,000 people since 1990.

Do those Lafayette numbers take in surrounding small towns? The Lake Charles number is strictly Lake Charles proper and doesn't include Sulphur, Westlake, Moss Bluff or Vinton.

They crave the Lafayette culture enhanced by the surrounding areas.

Ever heard of a Sulphur haircut? Neither has anyone else.

The Lake Charles area got hit hard by Hurricane Rita in '05 which probably is to blame for the stagnant population growth that appears between 2000 and 2010. After that, the growth begins again.

If I recall (I'm 62), Lake Chuck and Las Vegas, Nevada had roughly the same population in the 1960 Census.

We took too long to build the casinos.

I don't think so. Everything I can find has Lafayette (city) around 127/128 and Lafayette (Parish) around 240. The Parish is pretty small so I don't think there would be that big of a difference if it was taking in surrounding areas.

Yep. Lafayette Parish is going to turn New Iberia into Opelousas/Ville Platte/Jeanerette within 10-20 years.

It's sort of sad in Louisiana that these sorts of charming looking smaller towns (mostly New Iberia and Opelousas, not so much Ville Platte and Jeanerette) closer to bigger growing cities aren't able to become fashionable bedroom communities to those growing cities, like in a lot of other states. Instead they become sort of sad wastelands, while we create more bland suburbia around the growing cities for the people who lived in these towns to now move to.
