Sorry to hear you’re goi g through that. I suffer greatly from depression. Been thinking of ending it for a few weeks now and it’s not a comfortable place to be

Been there my friend. First thing is accepting your depression and not cave in from people that say it's fake. Find a friend or family member that you trust and talk. If you go the medical route for medicine, you might go throw ten before you find one that suited you..but got to keep trying. This is not your fault. We are just wired differently whether it's a chemical imbalance or what. I am not in expert or therapist, just somebody that's been through it for awhile. If you have bad days, just go to the SEC rant and tell the trolls they suck lol. Nobody likes them anyway.

I don’t think it has “declined” anymore than normal. I just think it’s more noticeable. Shutting down most if not all of a states asylums will do this. They’re no longer locked up and cared for, they’re given iPhones to make tik too videos.

Can’t take a pill to solve this thing called life…

“ Abandon the urge to simplify everything, to look for formulas
and easy answers, and begin to think multi-dimensionally, to
glory in the mystery and paradoxes of life, not to be dismayed
by the multitude of causes and consequences that are inherent
in each experience -- to appreciate the fact that life is complex.

We hear more about mental health now because people are not as ashamed to talk about it as they used to be.

Would still be talking/interacting with people like in my current role, but would be on my feet all day (very important to me), would probably have colleagues that I related to more, and I would feel like I'm out of the corporate rat race. I wouldn't be staring at technology all day. If server jobs paid close to what my current job does, I would quit it in a heartbeat to go do something like that.

You’re not alone. I’ll be ridiculed for saying this but my #1 skill and best that I ever was was as a server. The problem is that I’m 47 now. I went through a crisis 7 years ago and had to fall back on waiting tables for a year and I was still kick arse at it. I love it but it’s not a career and nights and weekends suck. Waiting tables really helped me pick back the pieces of my life and put them back together.

I have a decent job now and still lots of interaction but it’s through Teams and I’m behind a desk staring at 2 monitors all day. I’m not really good at it but I get by.

I struggle with it too. I think it comes down too, they used to not have time for these problems back in the early 1900s. You had to focus on having enough to live. Slowly as we progressed in the 1900s and more people began having more. Less real problems to worry about like living and more fake problems made it progress, however it was misdiagnosed and mistreated. People didn’t have the global connectivity they have in the coming 40-50 years so you don’t have people talking about it.

Finally you get to the 90s 00s and now. People have almost no real problems and start manufacturing them bc they have much more times to get in their own heads and develop problems for themselves. Couple that with the fact that we’re connected to everyone everywhere. Everyone has a voice so you know about anything and everything. Each and every person that has these issues is counted today.

Also, the decline of nationalism and having a common enemy, ie Nazi Germany, Soviet Union a lot less reason to unite as a nation and then we look inward and see all the differences and problems.

TLDR: A ton of contributing factors that basically boil down to, we don’t have any real problems so we contrive them. Couple that with the fact that we can hear about anyone and everyone and any study done on mental health today.

I know I'm late to the thread, but since it's still going:

Why has mental health declined so much over the years?

Because these days, it is celebrated and enabled rather than treated.

That's it. That's the main reason IMO.

How so? Unless you're talking about LGBTQ type stuff and then I get what you're saying.

PUSSIFACATION
Nowadays, you hear people say oh I’m sorry, rather than excuse me. People need to speak the truth. And not have back doors.

Good question I wish I had an answer

Well relationships have dwindled.

The internet is part of this.

Say you have a family of 5 and they are in diff parts of the house.

Instead of talking to each other, the mom texts everyone what they want for dinner.

Now this one thing isnt the only reason, just an example of how interpersonal skills have dwindled and how young people cant talk to anyone or look them in the eyes. Cant do conflict resolution without blowing a gasket or just running away.

I don’t think we evolved to have this much information about things that aren’t directly in our physical environment.

Same goes for people we interact with. Maybe the more local we are, the better.

Another thing is rampant commercialism/keeping up with the Joneses. “Comparison is the thief of joy” is a worn phrase now, but it’s a real thing.
Mimetic conflict, the kind of thing that from the dawn of history has led to real physical violence as people tried to take what others have, is still alive and well, but now it may be manifesting as violence we do to ourselves, internally.

Advertising is built on taking advantage of this inherent weakness, and advertising is now everywhere.

24/7 "news" that is 97% negative, and 100% pushing narratives depending on their side of the fence.

Social Media: It's given everyone a perceived voice that they never had, and people are comparing themselves to everyone else's fake lives.

Yes. Think about what just keeping house in 1900 looked like. Scrubbing your clothes in a wash tub and hanging them to dry. No microwave, takeout, frozen dinners, or pre-made meals. No dishwasher after the dinner you cooked.

If you got a splinter, you may die from it. People had so much more appreciation for life because it wasn't guaranteed.

Life was BUSY and dangerous. Now it is not.

We now need safe spaces in our air conditioned office buildings to drink our venti chai soy mocha lattes with cold foam.
