Definitely got worse during lockdowns.

And it’s now frowned upon to call out a problem. Hell we treat identity disorders now by demanding that society validate them. It’s like the entire psyche treatment profession just gave up.

Because we are so much free time. Back in the 50's & 60's men did everything, except clean house, make sandwiches and have babies. There wasn't time to worry about things, or spend all day posting on bulletin boards. Most of them didn't consult friends or associates when making big decisions. They just made them and lived with them.

Men had to be physically strong to do manual labor. Even executive types mowed their own yards, and fixed things around the house. They all knew how to change their oil. My dad overhauled the straight six engine in our 1963 Ford a couple of times in the backyard.

Today we just expect to be able to pull out money and pay someone to do stuff. It gives us lots of free time to over-think everything.

I would imagine there were lots of people that had mental problems that were never talked about. Everyone just accepted the fact that daddy was a hot head, who might beat his wife for not having a sandwich ready when he came in from plowing his garden.

Hope everyone knows I'm just blowing smoke in an effort to sound tough. How'd I do?

My question for y’all today is why do you think mental health in our society has declined so much over the years?

What are your thoughts on this?

We’re pussies.

Grok didn’t have time to worry about mental illness and prayer and all that useless shite when he was killing animals, surviving brutal weather, and defending his family from danger thousands of years ago. He didn’t have a supermarket, heating or AC, guns, 911, or Jesus - and yet he survived because he had no choice.

Life is too easy in 2023. Our ancestors would laugh at our sorry asses and so-called problems.

Do you feel like mental health struggles are just a lot more amplified today because it is so much out in the open?
No.

People are simply without hope or purpose, and that sentiment is compounded by the destructive nature of social media and mainstream media.

Think of your run of the mill American. They have to wake up every day to perform a dead end job, which they likely hate, to receive a meager pay to buy all the crap they are told they have to have to be happy, while constantly being bombarded by images and videos of others who have it “better” than they do.

Nihilism, hopelessness

Everything is negative everywhere and to obtain something “positive”, you need money, resulting in a chase with no success at the end.

For example, think back to our grandparents era, say the 1940’s. Obviously antidepressants didn’t exist back then. I know the field of psychology was around, but did people during that time have therapy options like we do today?

They recommended amphetamines for pretty much everything back then too so everyone had plenty of dopamine and was too euphoric and productive to be depressed.

shite In the 1940s you could go to any drugstore and get a Benzedrine inhaler full of pure amphetamine oil for congestion over the counter.

We definitely have a lot more to be depressed about over the recent years. Also families stayed together back then, therefore people had more support and accountability to keep going in tough times and provide for the family.

Really got out of hand when Simone Biles used as an excuse to bale on Olympics. Went mainstream after that.

Too much information all of the time. I'm prone to anxiety as is and I know that constant flow of information has made me more depressed and anxious as I get older. For example, this morning I'm scrolling on Facebook (stupid I know) and I see someone sharing a gofundme page for a family who recently lost their two year old. I saw this on an old colleague's page, a person I haven't actually talked to in years, and its about a person who lives 5 states away and I'll never know. Now I'm thinking about how depressing that whole thing is and it brings me down. I would have never seen this pre social media days. The constant flow of negative news is just a downer, and its not that there is more bad news today than years ago, its just always there for you to see. In 1985 if you didn't catch the news at 6:30, then you missed out on the news for the most part. If something didn't happen in your immediate area, then you didn't know about it, and didn't worry about it.

This is pretty on point. I think most people would be much more fulfilled herding goats in afghanistan than sitting in front of a screen all day every day.

Most of us waste our lives going thru motions in a plug and play system. It's inhuman.

Consumerism robs people of quality of life, while most falsely thinks it increases it.

Self actualization should be the goal, most of us are stuck in basic security issues.
