Another factor:
Architecture and building used to be a major initiative.
The people who did it were highly skilled and took great pride in their work.
Technology has advanced and made it possible to build things quicker, easier, and cheaper. But that sort of mass production leads inevitable to homogenization.

I myself find it too unbelieveable to think that an advanced culture would spring from the steppe peoples culture.

My theory is that when photography was invented painting had to change. There was no point in realism when photography could do so much better. So Impressionism took stage, then weirder stuff as it became voguish to deconstruct everything. This spilled over into other art forms like archeology.
In short, technology caused philosophers to deconstruct every tradition. This led to experimentation and the avante garde - the need to always be pushing the envelope. Eventually they ended up out of ideas and began sticking crucifixes in urine and building the Obama library.
ETA: If you want to see a wonderful movie that touches on this try Colours of Time. It’s a French movie with subtitles, brilliantly shot and directed.

They had to tear down the old cotton exchange building because it was structurally unsound and in danger of collapse. My ancestors worked in that building.

But why did newer Catholic Churches in particular become so damned ugly? Almost brutality especially those built from 1960 to 1990? Very boxy and uninspiring.

The automobile changes are driven primarily due to the elimination of weight in the name of reduction of fuel consumption. Toss in fantasies of reduction of greenhouse gases in the name of carbon reduction.

When all of this started there were hardly any communists. Certainly not enough to affect the culture that way. Their efforts to undermine the arts are grafted onto this trend; they didn’t create it.

Brutalist architecture is cheap to build.
Put up a 4 story rectangle with 600 apartments and go cheap on everything possible. Slap some limestone on the corners and call it a day.
Also the rise of the internet and attention stealing devices stunted the progress of everything else. Go back in time to 2006 and it’s not much different than now. Go back from 2006 to 1986 and it was a different world in terms of music, fashion, lifestyle and hobbies, etc.

Metal siding with few windows is the cheapest way to build.

The influence on the architecture field. There's also this belief that "new" and/or "unique" always equates to "better". This is why you get crap like the tomb/titty known as St. Jean Vianney.
