I don't know the answer to that. I'm not sure it its compensated any better or if there is some sense of altruism that drives it.

You should change your name to Tommy Strong.

Actually this is so true in most parts of germany. By 10th grade, they know if they're going the vo tech route or university route. votech isn't looked lesser upon and is actually viewed as something necessary and their skills are appreciated.
Oh I know it is, and I was serious with my response.

I'd have no problem giving everyone a free education post-high school, however, that can't be four year education for everyone. That's insane.
We need less history majors and more people with trade skills in mechanics and HVAC, for example
THIS. I make a damn good living as an independent insurance adjuster but I don't think more than 2% of the my job was something that I learned in college. The math and writing skills I utilize were learned in high school or earlier. The rest is what I learned fixing stuff around the house with my father or working construction jobs in the summer. I see plumbing invoices every day that make me fall out of my chair laughing at what these guys charge.

Free college would work if they substantially raised the standards to get in. WAYYYYY too many people are getting accepted into colleges that simply do not belong.

If you look at the past several decades you can see a decrease in value of a college degree.. Depending on what you have a degree in.
When I graduated HS in 97, at that time you needed a college degree to get any type of decent job. There were jobs that simply required "a four year degree", it was pretty much used as a filter, but because it was, everyone adapted and more people started going to college (this started in the 80s... maybe earlier)
Today, unless you go to college to be an engineer, lawyer, doctor, work in the media, teaching and any other profession I might forget, the best value is going to some type of tech school to learn a skill in something specific.
To some degree, I think the appeal of college is "living the college life". I also think online degrees have devalued degrees as well. People can register at Grand Canyon University and get a degree, so it just doesn't hold the same weight.

More people with education is bad. Such stupid logic. You are basically saying people need to be dumb and poor so they don't catch up to you, so you don't have to be poor

Have you ever noticed that all the colleges have affirmative action and count the right number of beans for their student body but in spite of that if a Kennedy wants to go to Harvard he/she goes to Harvard?

Free college has never been for the people's betterment. It's just another left wing plot to procure more and more long term votes. The left has figured out a very, very simple, and very powerful tool. Free stuff gets votes... damn the costs.
The right has the country's best interests at heart. The left USED to when lots of people were treated unfairly and needed a voice. They are no longer that institution. They aren't even a shadow of their former selves.
I wish our populace knew the rule "there's no such thing as free." And I wish they would do the math for themselves instead of coming back with their mouths open for the poison.
Alas, the strength of the American people is a misnomer. We are just people. Strong in some ways. Weak in some ways.
Will we do something to remember we ARE the boss?

But you didn't see that "Good Times" episode where Florida was explaining that a poor child might answer "the table" for the question "What does a cup sit on?" because they couldn't afford saucers?
very compelling
should have paid more attention to that show because basically Michael is the president now

Free college = more people with degrees
Here's where you go off the rails. This is such a general assumption as to be meaningless. If free college is available only to those with appropriate academic qualifications, this is not necessarily true.
quote:
More people with degree = less value per degree
This is also meaningless. Not all degrees are equal. More MD's would probably be a very good thing. More lawyers, not so much. Does that make the degree less valuable? And if you are looking at it from a policy point of view, why would you care if any particular degreed position earned less money if this meant that average incomes increased for those degree holders?
quote:
GOVT wants to flood the market with degrees, lower their value even more, and make MORE people dependent on them.
This is really just stupid.

Perhaps it'll lead to the creation of something more prestigious than a PhD
