Society has gotten downright sloppy!!! When I was young, we dressed up to go shopping, including hat and gloves.

Those criticizing what someone wears to church is probably missing the value of going to church.
Go to church in a t-shirt, shorts, and flip flops...no one should care in the least.

You’re missing the point. It’s not that anyone should care what you wear. It’s having respect for the institution and occasion to dress in a respectful manner.
I enjoy casual dress as much as anyone, but I do think you should be aware of where you are going and what you’re doing.
PFG fishing shirts- no matter how starched- are not business attire nor appropriate for traditional religious services.

Because if you don't live in a major city like NYC, DC, LA, ect, when you dress nice, people assume you're:
1. out of place
2. a try-hard douche
3. you think you're better than everyone else
What?

I'll always wear a tie for those occasions, but if it's hot I'm not wearing a jacket.
Yikes. A jacket with no tie is at least better than a tie with no jacket.
Tie with no jacket reminds me of the 14 year old dudes dressing for homecoming back in high school.

Not sure where the OP is located, but ‘dressing up’ is definitely a Southern thing.. Not saying that he is wrong or backwards, but the trend towards all things casual has been going on around the US for at least the last 20 yrs.. As with most things, the South is the last to be impacted by things, so if the OP is just now noticing people dressing more casually, then i’m guessing that he most likely lives in the South.

Hell, people wear their pj's to grocery shop.

I don't leave the house without a collared shirt (except when i'm going to the gym)

You know you are on the OT when someone ask if it's ok to wear dressy jeans to a nice restaurant for dinner.
Each situation is different, but I tend to over dress for a lot of situations. I can't stand a trashy arse person at a nice event.

Who doesn't wear a suit to a wedding?
While I agree with you, country folk have weddings where a suit and tie would look ridiculous. I'd bet half of my maternal side of the family has never owned a suit in their lives.
Keep in mind - this is a wedding in a Knights of Columbus hall or in a gym/rec room attached to the one Catholic church in their tiny town.

Yep. I’ve been to plenty of weddings that you would feel ridiculous if you wore a suit.
And yes, they were absolutely trashy weddings by OT standards.
I think my favorite was the one where the bridal music starting skipping (from the CD) as the bride was walking down the aisle

My 2nd cousin had the nicest wedding of any that I've been to in the town my mom is from and STILL, she was 18, the reception was in the gymnasium attached to the church, they had a boombox playing music through a big speaker, the bride and groom's first dance was Taylor Swift, the only alcohol was canned Bud Light that 2 family members were serving out of the concession stand window normally used during basketball games, and the food was the weirdest conglomerate of foods that random family members cooked and brought. Old men in coveralls, young guys in jeans.
Another family member had them present his new bride with a shotgun

People are finally coming to their senses and realizing comfort is more important that quote dressing up.

I have never been less comfortable in dressier clothes. In fact, some of it is very comfy. The only reason it's more difficult is the upkeep (dry cleaning, pressing, etc). Otherwise, I could wear a suit everyday and feel just as comfy as wearing jeans and a button down to work (heat of wearing a jacket typically not an issue for my work place)

These are the dumbest comments. If you’re so uncomfortable in dress clothes, you’re wearing shitty clothes. Don’t tell me hot arse jeans are comfortable.

All part of the calculated destruction of traditional western values. 1st no more hats, then no ties, then out of control teen pregnancy and men marrying men. Was easy to see this from the start.

I am so old I can remember when people used to dress up to fly and to go to home games!!

I find it funny that we base our standard of formal dress on the whims of the French King Louis XIII. Just because he thought the tie on Croatian mercenaries' looked neat.
