Come back when you actually understand the terms you are using.

Bro, how do you even begin to think humans have stopped evolving? They discovered 7 new genders just today!

The Nazis tried this. See how it worked for them.

Nice try, but here's the problem with your argument.

Every one of us as individuals have our own agenda. We want sex, plenty of food, etc. We want our kids to do well.

But pretty much nobody gives much of a damn about how homo sapiens will end up 50,000 years from now. Killing off people I think are "unfit" today is unlikely to do much good before then and will likely just land me in prison. It'll be a cold day in hell before I spend much time trying to "improve our species". Nature does a good enough job doing the work for me.

I think the theory is called eugenics and was practiced by Nazis and Progressives. Thanks Margaret Seanger!

Yeah, the argument is built on the faulty premise of "a person will always want to do what is best for the human species". That is simply not the case.

Probably the best reply to the OP in the thread.

I argue for natural slelection all the time and get vilified for it.

I think we as a society should allow nature to take its course with everyone who suffers from peanut allergies. We’re only exacerbating the problem by letting these people procreate. I’m sure you’re a nice person but if you can’t eat a nut without going into shock then we’re going to have to let you go.

Yes, why? Not happening fast enough for you? It all washes, while new medical advancements prolong the life of some...smartphones and motorized vehicles hasten others.

Of course, I think implicit in your point is that the (this will sound harsh) ‘substandard’ people that we are keeping alive today will no longer exist going forward once we get our hands on the DNA reigns.

You’re really talking about eugenics, which is not the same as natural selection.

To your point though, mankind has disrupted the process of natural selection to an extent. We can see the effects in other species via selective breeding.

You could make the argument that “survival of the fittest” doesn’t apply so much to modern day humans; that our technology has developed faster than our biological instincts. I don’t think that’s the whole story, though, for two reasons:
- We still have the instinct to choose a healthy (read: attractive) mate.
- We now have a societal push to choose a successful mate.

All of that being said, we are not far from eugenics becoming a mainstream issue. “Designer babies” used to be sci-fi but the technology is not far off. Genetic augmentation shortcuts the evolutionary process, and we need to be very careful about the direction we move as a species. Biodiversity helps ensure survival.. eliminating it increases risks of both genetic and infectious diseases wiping out a portion of the population.

I really think we should just take the warning labels off everything. If someone wants to take a shower AND make toast at the same time, what right does society have to tell them they shouldn't? Maybe they need that excitement in their life. I don't know, and I don't judge.

Sometimes I think it's best for me not to pass down my poor genes via procreation.

So evolution has stopped for man but continues on for other species?

which evolution mechanism has stopped in man? adaption, mutation, natural selection, death, gene flow, etc...?

Um, I'm not so sure that last one is a universal trait with all people. There are a lot of selfish, immature parents who could care less about their kids grades and well-being, and future, whose parents were the same way.

But why? If someone truly in their heart believes that evolution and survival of the fittest produces the best a species has to offer, how does that square with thwarting the process?

everything we have now
Medicine, Extension of life, cure for disease is a by product of evolution.

We evolved advanced minds and language allowing us to utilize collective knowledge to get to these advancements.

Now our bodies and minds adapt more as our new realities start to set in. We no longer need wisdom teeth and people are being born without them as a small example because farming and processed food has taken away the need for them.

As we create new things that our evolved intelligence allows us to create our bodies will adapt in new ways. Go to a plantation now that has preserved furniture and you will see the size difference from then to now as humans have evolved to get bigger.

As sad as is it to say a lot undesirable traits are going to be bred out eventually because honestly not many people will want to procreate with those individuals.

Wouldn't this require them dying before they reproduce?

You started off well enough, but now you're going off the deep end.

You're right in that modern medical science has pumped the brakes on natural selection, but who cares if only the "best" survive when even the weakest can now live long enough to make extraordinary contributions to society. Stephen Hawking is an obvious poster boy for this idea.

I am nearsighted and should have been run over by a bus a long time ago, but I'm also extremely handsome and intelligent so things like that even out.
