I had a buddy in Desert Storm who brought back an Iraqi AK-47 with the bolt welded shut.

It's a little different fighting actual countries like Germany, Italy, and Japan than fighting stateless insurgencies. What is there worth bringing back that the sand people have?

A friend of mine brought back money with Saddams face on it and some knives. Had them framed but gave them to a friend because he couldn't stand to look at it.

My buddy brought back a suitcase of Saddam money. He gave out handfuls of it to everyone at a party and we kept it in our cars. We would give it to beggars in Fayetteville and tell them to take it to the bank and turn it in for US dollars. After a couple of weeks, a notice went around all the commands at Bragg - “Whoever is giving Dinars to homeless people needs to stop.”

FWIW - this was the Saddam money which is worthless. But I looked up the new money and it is worth 0.00086 of a US dollar. LoL.

I was watching one of those shows (pawn stars maybe) and somebody’s prized German military medal that his father claimed to take off of an officer was really a civilian medal for what was basically a mayor.

A guy I deployed with tried to sneak a pistol home. He got caught and was kicked out of the career field.

That is why.

It wasn't even allowed in WW2 but the penalties were that the stuff just got confiscated when re-entering the USA. My grandpa hid things in his luggage and was able to sneak in a few Japanese weapons. The guy in front of him wasn't so lucky.

What are they going to bring home, sand?

I was offered a DsHK 50 cal from my Afghan soldiers that they confiscated from the Taliban after a firefight. They offered to break it down and send it to my US address in multiple packages. Although that would have been sweet, I couldn’t accept. We did take it to their range and have some fun with it though.

In the Navy, there were ways to get around the inspections.

Any contraband would be stored in the engineering compartment of our submarine. It is a classified area and inspectors are not allowed to enter.

We would load up on Cuban cigars and liquor to be sold when we got back home.

I'm sure it would be more difficult to ship contraband home from Iraq but I'd try things like shipping equipment back to my unit's basse and having a nondeployed buddy take it out upon arrival.
