re: Why does LSU admissions take Louisiana kids for granted?

Just looked up enrollment info for last year vs when I started in 2012. Blew me away.
The school is like 60/40 in state/out of state now. I think it was like 80/20 when I was there. That’s a huge culture shift IMO. I really loved being an out of state student surrounded by locals. Felt like I actually got to really experience Louisiana culture because almost all of my friends were in state.
Having the balance shift so much and likely to continue will absolutely erode the generational tradition there because the out of state kids really just wanna come down for 4 years, have fun, then high tail it out of there for work. Basically leaving you with a more broken generational chain to the school.

Laughs them off? Surely they get admitted. LSU's standards aren't that high
I meant LSU won’t offer them much of anything $$$ wise.

LSU does not value the best from the state. They go through the motions of having an honors college unlike some other flagship universities that have immersive programs with extra classes and experiences for the braniacs among us..
A Louisiana resident with a 32 or better ACT and 3.5 automatically gets almost a full tuition scholarship at Alabama and is treated like an honor student. It is often full with departmental scholarships.
This is the honors dorm at LSU:
Regular dorm room nuilt in 1949 with hall showers.
This is the honors dorm at Alabama:
Individual bedroom with en suite bathrooms, kitchen and living rooms. Built in 2009

Lsu will send students this big glossy financial aid package showing the money awarded for the next four years. It looks like a lot until you look at the total cost. When I started college tuition was $392 per semester when I graduated. It was 542 per semester. As a high school senior working part time on my two week paycheck was close to the cost of a semester tuition. I can’t imagine a high school senior making the cost of semester every two weeks.

Sounds like you and your friends are just too white for LSU.

Sorry, that's not why you attend a university. That's why you go on spring break. Louisiana pushes businesses out of state, so why not go out of state as a student?
I hope mine never entertain going to LSU, but they'll probably turn into the kids wearing LSU shite while attending another SEC school. That shite pissed me off in the 90s. If you wanted to go to UF, just go there.

LSU offered TOPS and nothing else.
Because the state has to pay for so many students they cannot afford to offer in state kids anything else.

Why did LSU admit unqualified? That doesn’t help their success and graduation numbers.

Because a lot of kids applying and going to LSU have insane stats. No offense but if you’re a top student they roll out the red carpet. You think 30 is good but to get the red carpet treatment you need straight A’s and a 34 or higher act because those are the instate students getting the money from LSU

I have friends and relatives who have done the same thing because the financial package they get from out of state schools is much better than the one they get from Louisiana schools This contributes to the brain drain from Louisiana.
I don’t blame LSU so much as I blame the Louisiana legislature for not making this a priority like our neighboring states are doing.

LSU has become more selective. They have never been in higher demand. The brand is popular nationwide. They expected > 50k freshman applications for the 2025-26 school year.
Learned this while attending my daughter’s orientation. LSU staff said demand for all SEC state schools is on the rise.

Which is ridiculous. You shouldn’t have to be a 99th percentile student nationally to get more than the guaranteed minimum scholarship at the state flagship university in a state filled with retards

The private liberal arts colleges are going away. The flagship SECs schools are growing. LSU, OM, Alabama, etc

Replys that LSU makes more money from out-of-state students are basically correct for undergrads. For every oos student given a scholarship a few more oos come paying full out-of-state tuition. Doctoral programs are very different with each specialty having a unique support profile. Most student funding has come from competitive research grants won by faculty (that may have just changed due to federal reductions). State money for PhD candidates is almost exclusively for teaching assistants. Some departments have many and others few or none. LSU is known to provide little graduate funding. Alabama has a stronger record in that area.

If you're in the Top 5%, there's a chance UT and A&M will give you something because of their huge endowment.
At a minimum you get guaranteed admission. Top 6% actually.

Two going to Ole Miss, one to Bama, and one to Miss St.
I live in close driving distance to LSU campus so it made sense for my kids. I literally haven’t paid a dime for all their years at LSU. I do understand your frustration though. Ole Miss, Miss State, and Bama aren’t going to pay for “most” LA kids full room, board, books, etc. It’s basically a wash if you attend LSU, Miss State, Ole Miss, or Bama. It’s the same cost. My kids would probably liked to have lived in a dorm and get the full experience, but no debt is more important to them.

Try 50+ years...my roommate in 60's was 4.0 physics major. Couldn't get accepted at LSU grad program. Went to FSU freebie. I think Nash Roberts son had similar experience
Grad school is very different than undergrad, which is what everyone here is talking about.

LSU's overall acceptance rate is approximately 74%. This means that for every 100 applicants, 74 are admitted. While LSU does not publicly differentiate between in-state and out-of-state acceptance rates, the overall rate suggests it's not highly selective

My kid’s resumes were better than that in ACT and GPA. They got full tuition at LSU. What you are trying to say is a full scholarship. Room, board, books, etc. can cost more than the tuition in some cases. It’s close. Full tuition is nice but you still have to pay 15-20K per year minimum to live on campus. A full scholarship is the holy grail and LSU gives out very few of those. Very few.

My cousin graduated with Honors at a big suburban high school in a good district near Houston. He got a scholly offer to cover half the cost but he passed on it because it was still still to expensive. He ended up LSU on a full ride.
