I have this and love it.
My parents property is 50 acres surrounded on 3 sides with Kistachie National Forest
I spend the weekend there and then I come home to sit on my own back porch, and well, it just isn't the same when I can hear the neighbors kids yelling at each other, the firetruck sirens going off, the other neighbors dog is barking at a squirrel, etc

You didn’t pee off your front porch when you lived in the city? Is there something wrong with me?

I do own a fair size chunk of land.
I live down a dead end street with woods and fields all around me. There are only 12 families that live down my road and the road is about 2 1/2 miles long.

My mother left the ranch life because it was too patriarchal, racist, sexist? Not sure exactly, but she was one of the strivers. She probably felt insecure and decided she had to make something more of herself. Of course, she hasn’t.
I think this is generally why people leave their small times. They feel like if they stay forever they won’t be who they really want to be. And it’s true that u won’t get rich staying in your small town. I’m not sure that’s really what life is about though. America has a major problem with scale. Everything is too big. Too commerical. Nobody builds roots in their hometown. Everybody is just a zombie looking for the next great place to make some shekels. Nobody cares about the community they live in because they might not even live there a year or two from now. And if they do stay, their neighbours may not. This is something conservatives should think about more. Some perfect political ideology is not going to save America. We have major problems that need to be addressed completely.
Don't know how old you are. But your mom may have had good reasons to leave at the time. Nostalgia is powerful, but sometimes it makes us forget past problems. That's human nature.
Some areas are still relatively racist and sexist (and I'm using the sensible version based on modern terms, not the far leftist version). Smaller towns are more remotely located. They usually attract the kind of people who are okay with being discriminatory.
However, I know very well that there are always good and bad people wherever you go. And all places are not like that.
Conservatism was never the problem. The bigger problem is that resources are usually pooled into a few hands. This makes people of value look elsewhere for opportunities.

Less than 5 minutes from the office. No traffic.....ever
I work for a company that still begins company wide meetings with the Pledge. If you don't agree, you're welcome to sit on your arse and watch.
After my ex left, I had multiple families ready to help me with our children. Always someone asking what they could do to help. Now I understand that's not something limited to small town life, but I felt at ease with these people. They had grown up here and lived here their entire lives.
50 miles from Columbia, 2 hours from Atlanta and Charlotte.
20 miles from Augusta
Good schools where I know the teachers personally.
Home for lunch to let the dogs out.

I'm not saying I'll be living in NYC or Chicago
It's not about partying or wanting to go-go-go.. plenty of 40+ people are just fine relaxing in a city BR's size. I'd hardly call BR super urban.

Exactly. I had a hell of a time in my 20's and 30's living all over the world, partying my arse off, enjoying the various types of nightlife, etc. And eventually it just got old.
I still love to travel, but have zero desire to live in a big city again.

Everyone is discriminatory, and everyone's ok with it as long as they aren't on the receiving end

I've known quite a few who swore, but ended up in small towns in places like Napa and Hawaii.

It is quieter, and I actually have a good slice of land which wouldn't happen in the city. Land+nature+doing whatever the hell I want >>>> city life

I have zero doubt that we will all continue changing as we age.
There are larger cities all over the country with plenty of 40+ people living in there. Knowing some people who changed their minds doesn't really change that.
