Rural is too often a pipe dream in the Southeast. I like the idea but in practice it's just hard to find a good balance in a truly rural area.

It'll depends. I can easily find truly rural living within 30-40 minutes of downtown Cola.

Now could I find that outside Atlanta or Charlotte? Hell no.

There’s rural as shite towns 30 minutes outside of Dallas.

Downtown Dallas?

Not being snarky...honestly asking. That just seems unlikely for a city that size.

ETA: And for clarification, when I say rural I don't mean small exurb towns. I mean 30 minutes outside of Cola you can find acres and acres of farmland and forest with an old farmhouse here and there.

Yes. 30 minutes east on I30 sets you in the middle of farm land and cattle pastures. There’s a couple cities of 10-20k people, but mainly just acreage.

Pretty interesting how you choose to live in one that isn’t close to the actual demographics of the city, yet get mad at other people for admitting why they (and other people such as yourself) do this.

Around here all the idyllic rural areas are basically resort areas at this point. We've discussed on here before, but given that people are changing how they work and are less tethered to urban areas for professional jobs, I hope that may start to shift in a couple generations.

I know exactly what you're talking about. I spent an unfortunate weekend in Serenbe, GA a few years ago. It was this really odd combination of nice homes and the middle of the nowhere farmland.

Waxahachie, TX
Temple, TX

Both aren’t too far from Dallas/Ft. Worth

I've never even heard of that place. Google mapped it.

It's a nice little area but my God I was bored out of my mind there within 5 hours. Guess it goes to show that I'm just not meant for small town life.

Pretty much nailed it, except the demographics swung a little closer to those nearing retirement, so no yoga pants.

You clearly haven’t been to either because they’re not rural.

Small town, sure. Not rural.

Everyone on the OT has both!

A ranch/hunting lodge/Lake home for the weekends and a house in the city during the week..

What are you doing wrong?

Waxahachie population is 30k
Temple is 73k

So rural.

I’m in temple regularly. My BIL lives there. I’ve stopped in waxahachie on the way down many times. They’re small, but anything but rural.

Temple? Almost to 75,000 people. That's not a small town.

It's expanding out, but in five minutes from "downtown" there are cattle ranches and farming. Heck Heidenheimer is 8 minutes away, and an entire world away.

But Temple is national franchise crazy for food. You have to look hard to find decent, non-franchise food. But it's not expensive, downtown is still a real downtown. The one decent cigar shop has nowhere to sit and enjoy your purchase.

True, I was thinking in reference to Dallas because we were talking rural places not far from downtown.

They even have a loop

Yeah it’s chain central. My BIL lives by the hospital and it’s just surrounded by every chain you can imagine.

No, but you chose to defend AU_251's argument, which made me think y'all were the same person.
