Probably more common back east. Lots of places out West don't have that option.

Hell, the only chain we have here is a McDOnalds, town of 32,000.

the older I get, the more my desire to move to country grows

I just enjoy the peacefulness of sitting on a porch and not hearing cars constantly drive by

Or hearing the neighbors dogs barking

Or just seeing my neighbors when I walk outside

That's crazy.

We have one McDonalds. All other eateries are local joints.

I once worked with a guy who lived in such as small town as a teenager, he had to convince a dominos driver to meet him halfway which ended up being 30 minute drive for him....I really can't imagine living like that

I like my kids to be able to grow up knowing people and getting along reasonably well.

They have friends at school, church, and the Y, with a bit of overlap between them, as opposed to either being in a very small group or a group too large to have friends from year to year at school.

As far as moving away, it’s kind of a given as they grow up. Unless they marry their HS sweetheart the picking are slim for finding a spouse here because such a high percentage of the population are married couples.

I grew up in super rural LA.

The first time I had pizza delivered to my apartment in college was a life changing experience for me

Grew up in New Orleans, but my Mom's family is in a small town. We always came here as a kid. Just loved it. I moved here 40 years ago and still love it. Nice slow pace, little crime, people stop and take the time to say hello and people here don't drive like assholes most of the time. Traffic is a bitch here if I catch one of the 5 red lights in town.

Oh, did I said the dam birds are loud around here and no out back ground noise? And I can set outside and piss in my yard when I want to.

I've lived all over the world. I've had pages added to my passport quite a few times. I've driven to almost 50 states. And I've hubg out with baws in Africa and southeast Asia.

And I will never live outside of south Louisiana again.

Yeah, it has issues. Yeah, the people aren't always the best. But when things get real, they step up.

There's a certain sweetness on even the hottest days. And a certain warmth even when the weather is cold. It's the greenest place I've ever seen. And it is centrally located for travel.

As for why I live rurally, I was outside at 3 am firing off about 40 rounds testing a new gun. And no one gave a shite.

I don’t, but I wish I did.
My mother left the ranch life because it was too patriarchal, racist, sexist? Not sure exactly, but she was one of the strivers. She probably felt insecure and decided she had to make something more of herself. Of course, she hasn’t.
I think this is generally why people leave their small times. They feel like if they stay forever they won’t be who they really want to be. And it’s true that u won’t get rich staying in your small town. I’m not sure that’s really what life is about though. America has a major problem with scale. Everything is too big. Too commerical. Nobody builds roots in their hometown. Everybody is just a zombie looking for the next great place to make some shekels. Nobody cares about the community they live in because they might not even live there a year or two from now. And if they do stay, their neighbours may not. This is something conservatives should think about more. Some perfect political ideology is not going to save America. We have major problems that need to be addressed completely.

“Their parents, grandparents, and so on lived with mine“
How many of us can say this? How many us of can point out a store in the town we live in and say “I went there when I was a kid with my grandparents”? This concept has been lost on a great portion of us
