Growing up in a small town, I have always looked forward to leaving it and experiencing new places and people. I love my family, but I realize that I prefer the conveniences and opportunities a larger city offers.

That said, I realize that different perspectives are a good thing and make us reflect on what we value. So for those of you who live in small towns, why is that so?

I don't like people, and there are fewer of them in a small town.

Because I like having dirt on everyone in town.

I know everyone, and everyone knows me. Their parents, grandparents, and so on lived with mine. There is a strong bond and sense of understanding that is not replicable. If that means no taco trucks, hip bars, or 'the new and exciting' thrill of being in a foreign, busy city, then so be it.

I haven't been in a hurry in years. Low stress, friendly faces, local business....

Relationships with close friends and family are important. Add to the fact that if you can make comparable income, you will be able to do much more with it, it has its benefits. However, in a place like Leesville, I understand where you're coming from.

Lack of traffic, low cost of living.

I'm a short drive from New Orleans or Mobile if I want city amenities, but I don't find myself making those trips very often.

For the most part: Less traffic, less crime, closer relationships with your neighbors, close access to wilderness, lower cost of living, less noticeable dysfunction, less stress, and most importantly, fewer people.

ETA: Yes, I'm in a mid-sized city at the moment, but I definitely prefer a small town.

Once a person has accumulated what they want why not live out in nowhere where no one will try to take your stuff? Once in maintenance mode instead of accumulation mode, it's a whole lot easier to maintain things without nasty, nosy, imbeciles coming around trying to get into your back pocket all the time. Plus if into hunting/fishing other "primitive" recreational activities, they are more readily available.
