re: Why do some people stop in traffic with 2-3 car lengths between them and the car in front?

So people will leave 1-3 car lengths in front of them while stopped to avoid being struck from behind into the car in front of them, but will also tailgate someone at 3 feet behind them at 90 miles per hour.
Makes a whole lot of sense.

Drivers ed has been teaching them that shite.

If someone wants to leave a massive gap in front of them at a red light, so be it.
What annoys the shite out of me is when someone does that and then creeps forward a few feet every 5 seconds. Pick a spot and stop.

to keep people not paying attention hitting them and pushing them into the car in front, thus making them responsible for hitting the other car. I always leave a decent gap in between for just that reason.

Google Smith Systems Drivers Safety. Best drivers safety training out there. Always leave a car length between you and the vehicle ahead of you.
As others have stated, if you are rear ended you will not be forced into the car ahead of you. Also if the car ahead of you were to stall out or die, you now have room to maneuver around them without having to back up first. Always avoid backing unless their is not other option.

I understand that. These people are stopping so far back that you could fit another 3 cars in the space
And if they are going straight, they are often preventing people from getting into the left turn lane. I hate it when people do this and I can't get into the left turn lane. I miss my arrow and have to sit through another light.

Leaving enough space to get rear ended and. It hit the car in front of me is my business. Most people pack in right behind folks, I don’t get it. Also, where are we going?

Not just that, but if some idiot tries to carjack you, you will have room to pull out of the lane and possibly avoid that situation.

Todays rule of thumb is to keep enough distance from the vehicle in front of you to be able to hit the gas and cut the wheels to avoid being carjacked.

Especially in the Different side of town.

I don’t leave a full car length in between but I do leave enough room for me to exit the area in case something happens that requires me to do so.

All the idiots saying two to three lengths in case you get rear ended. When there are 10 fricking cars behind you then pull up. No one is pushing ten cars into you.
When two or three cars take up 10-12 car lengths then no one else is getting through the light on that cycle.

Stopping short is dangerous because people watch the whole line of cars, not just the car in front of them. Plus it’s kind of a dick move to people further back in traffic who are trying to clear intersections.

Sounds like Green Rock Tiger has been rear-ended much harder than you... Prayers for both
