In today’s world what’s really a Native American? How many generations do we have to go back to be qualified as an Native American?

The issue isn’t really people who claim to be 100% Native American. There would be a very small number of people who could even possibly make that claim.

But there are huge numbers of people who have some percentage of native ancestry. Many native nations are merely disbursed by mixing. You see lots of native traits in all kinds of people in Acadiana.

Some people who identify as Cajun are really Filipino. When Louisiana was part of Spain, the trade route from the Phillipines went to the West Coast of Mexico, then overland to the Gulf. Some of them sidetracked to Louisiana and stayed.

Then there are the Canary Islanders, the Perez family of Plaquemines Parish being the most (in)famous.

Our society places a ludicrous amount of value on minority statuses. It's the same reason so many youngsters claim to be lgbtq

Yep.

Our current social framework is built upon an insane idea that “identity” is the most important thing.

No idea. It's really strange, but watch the replies in this thread. All of tigerdroppings will suddenly be on Native American descent. Much like an IQ thread, annual salary thread, MCAT, LSAT, dick size, etc.

No kidding.

As far as Scruffy is aware, he is a mutt of some kind from South LA on one side.

French, Spanish, probably some African in there.

It is an absolute unknown mess on that side. It could literally be anything.

Mom’s side is much easier. British and Scottish.

According to ancestry.com, this is true in my case. For some reason my mom's side believed they had native american in them. Not sure how they came to that conclusion. My grandpa was dark skinned with black thick hair (which eventually turned white), maybe they assumed it was native American.

My ancestry.com profile shows that I have south Italian and north African in me. My dad is from Georgia and it traces my ancestors in Georgia directly to western Europe (England, Ireland, Dutch) so I think my mom's dad's features came from the Italian & north African part of his DNA.
