Why do so many people lie about being Native American?

It seems there’s so many people that claim to be 100% Native American and then it turns out to be totally untrue. These people get their DNA tested and turns out that they have almost no Native American blood in them. There’s a girl that I work with who makes this claim, and the way that she looks makes it obviously untrue.
Do they do this just to make themselves feel special or to get special treatment from the government? Probably a combination of both?
Why is it always cool to claim to be part of a minority group rather than being white? Is it because being a “victim” is cool these days?

Most people just say it to use for an excuse at not being able to handle their liquor.

Its a common form of virtue signaling. It’s been fashionable my whole life to say this. I think that stupid people thinks it conveys certain virtues to the world. It feels ennobling to them.

I never really understood the desire to claim heritage to a people that were still nomadic hunters and gatherers as late as the 19th century.

Because it’s edgy to imagine primitivism is edgy and edgy.

If anyone suggests they're 100% native, they're a rare human today.

I don't understand how in 2019 America anyone get special rights. Everyone currently has the same opportunities.
