Why Do People Shoot Signs?

I grew up in a rural area, and I still don't understand this.
Every time I drive through a rural area, all of the signs are riddled with shotgun blasts.
It's certainly trashy.

If I lived in a rural area and was riding around with my buddies in high school drinking beers, I imagine shooting signs would be entertaining.
