I have a 13 ft built in run of desk high counter and counter to ceiling shelves that are centered on an 18 ft long wall. Entering or leaving the room does not necessitate walking in front of the screen at all. The TV opening is in the center of the wall. The fireplace is on the adjacent to the right wall

This is very similar to what we have. Large built-in we had built to accommodate a big tv, the associated components, and a load of books. Fireplace is on the adjacent wall with windows on either side. I really don’t care for the tv over the fireplace, but I have seen it done well.

I have no fireplace in my house. 85" TV set at perfect height , no neck strain. It amazes me how many people have their TV up near their ceiling over the fireplace.

Also, I think fireplaces in south Louisiana are ridiculous and they take up space.

Same. I had the builder omit the fireplace from my place. My home theater setup will always be the focal point until the day comes that I can afford a dedicated theater room

There is no way it's comfortable watching a TV 8 to 10 feet in the air.
You are correct. There are guidelines on how far away you need to be based on your TV elevation. Basically, you’re too close for comfort.

The higher the tv is, the farther you need to be away to have good head position. Google it. You can see the optimal elevation/viewing distance for the setup in question.

My TV is over the fireplace. It is about five feet off the ground. The height isn’t optimum for viewing, but viewing TV is not an important part of my life. Right now, for example, it is off, as it is most nights.

A fireplace and its associated structure should be the centerpiece of the room with a nice mantle and decorations/pictures on it. Throwing a tv up there over all of that just looks tacky in my opinion.

My TV is mounted so that it will be behind a four part folding door that is being painted with original art.

In my opinion, the TV doesn't belong in the room where the main fireplace is (if there is more than one fireplace).

The fireplace room should be the living room where conversation, cocktails, and reading occurs. The TV belongs in a media room, or den, or other room.

My fireplace is in the larger den, funny enough. I have a formal sitting/living room, and there's no fireplace in that room.

The AV "rule" is 1/3rd of the way up the screen should be ~48" off the floor. I see maybe 1 in 10 TVs at this height

I just checked and the 1/3 point of my TV is about 53” off the floor. And I would agree that ~6” lower would be ideal, so 48” sounds about right. In my case I run into some weird glare issues if I drop it any lower. But yeah, the idea is that the bottom third of the TV should be about eye level when seated.

I think this makes a big difference in how your sound system is aligned too. Ideally your center channel should be right below (most likely) or above (less likely) the TV for good localization. Then your L/R channel tweeters should be at about ear height on either side. If the bottom edge of your TV is 6’ in the air, either your speakers are way up on the wall (like shitty 3” satellites you find in cheap HTIB systems) or your imaging/localization is all fricked up.

Of course, most of the time when I see a TV over a fireplace they’re just using a sound bar anyway so I guess audio isn’t their focus to begin with. But I use stand-mounters and it’d be pretty awkward to have the TV 3+ feet above them.

people seem to get a lot closer with projector screens because they often have no choice because the screen is so tall

Probably also because projectors are usually installed by an AV tech who knows what they’re doing, or by a homeowner who has actually put a lot of thought into it.

I have a TV stand / media center that I’ll probably never part with. Fits all my audio gear and put the TV at the ideal height.

Agreed. I had that kind also, as did most of us from that era, but those screens were much more sturdy than an LED screen is unless the glass broke but they were pretty thick. Not nearly as fragile as current tvs.

I find it annoying how so many houses have built in shelving units. These units have no practical spot for the amps and/or preamps or receiver. That stuff doesn’t need to be inside an enclosed area with no ventilation.
And forget putting towers in a good spot. Most will not image properly up against those shelves.

Here is the thing, if you are really worried about high quality sound you really need a dedicated room with a PJ and an acoustically transparent screen so the front speakers can be in the right places and you don't have to deal with spousal acceptance factors and can put sound treatments on the wall.

In a two-channel rig stereo imaging can be important to paramount depending on your personal preference and what you listen to. Speakers can image well up against the wall it just depends on how the baffle step compensation is handled in the crossover and how the speaker baffle and the effective baffle of the wall impact diffraction. But that is a very minor concern in HT.

In multi-channel sound imaging is far less important because the mix of software and hardware will direct the sound through the various speakers to "locate" the sound. 5.1 can do a marginal job all the way up to a full-boat Trinnov processor that can output 64 channels for a fully immersive experience along with a staggering cost when you also add in 64 speakers and 64 channels of amplification.

The reality is few people even use a receiver-based 5.1 system as the vast majority of people use a soundbar maybe with a separate sub with their flat panels.

Mantle mount makes a mount with remote so you can lower the TV to proper height when watching and raise when not in use. Highly recommend.

Mantlemount

If your fireplace is the center focal point for your room and you have a gigantic arse TV in the corner, congrats on not being trashy, but unfortunately you’re retarded.
