Do they do it because it looks good over the fireplace? There is no way it's comfortable watching a TV 8 to 10 feet in the air.

It’s dumb…but people will do this and farm sinks because the neighbors have it.

I think mounting it over the fireplace is kind of dumb to begin with. A fireplace and its associated structure should be the centerpiece of the room with a nice mantle and decorations/pictures on it. Throwing a tv up there over all of that just looks tacky in my opinion. I realize most homes nowadays don’t have another place to put the tv though so I see why people do it, I just think it’s ridiculous most homes don’t have another viable option for a TV spot.

I still use a TV stand for ours. I like it about eye level and have all of my surround sound stuff on there too.

so you dont look at their dirty arse floors

if they are properly tilted down to face you its not bad, but the ones that high AND flat against the wall are just stupid and hard to watch

The purpose is to have a single focal point in the room. Without a TV, this would be the fireplace; Without the fireplace, it would be the TV.

Either way, it looks like a hotel and puts the TV at a poor angle.

Our living room is designed to where there really isn’t any other place to put the tv. It was weird at first but you cut used to it.

I get in the recliner and lean back. Perfectly comfortable for me.

It’s easier for everyone in the room to see a TV and have people over to watch a game when it’s in the middle of the room. Putting it on or in a cabinet makes that too difficult

The AV "rule" is 1/3rd of the way up the screen should be ~48" off the floor. I see maybe 1 in 10 TVs at this height, people seem to get a lot closer with projector screens because they often have no choice because the screen is so tall.

This is my understanding of it … if you want open floor designs, lots of natural light, and a fireplace, then you’re not left with much wall space to hang a six-plus foot TV.

There are a few reasons. Having it higher makes the sight lines easier, I don't have people walking in front of the TV. I have an alcove I could put a TV in with it on top of a stand, but the orientation of my house would be all screwed up, it would essentially be in a corner that the other side of the room couldn't see, and it would only be 3-4 foot lower than it is now. There are a few other reasons, but they aren't major reasons.
