Because caring for two dogs really isn't any more work than caring for one, and at least when I leave them at home while I'm at work they have each other to play with and keep each other company.

I have two dogs. Both of my dogs are house trained. I got the second one because the first one would not leave me alone when I was home.. And I felt it would be good to get him a companion, it was a good decision.

I got 2 puppies at once, German shorthaired pointers. Best decision I ever made. I'm not kidding when I say getting 2 pups at one time is easier than getting just one pup. They were super easy to house train, and because they had each other to keep them entertained they didn't chew shite up or destroy the house. I think my male chewed up only 1 of my hats as a puppy.

So they could keep each other company.

We have the one that roams the neighborhood. Since we’ve had her she had puppies and I think 3 survived. So I guess we technically have 4.

Because they guard our livestock and fare better as a pair against predators.

This. I have three because I don't have room for four.

So that the dogs can entertain and play with each other when the humans aren't around.

i am dog free at the moment but if I were to get a dog under 5 or so, I would get two. They can entertain each other.

Dogs cannot not further your genetic line. The more kids you pop out the stronger your family will be in the future.

Is the pleasure you get from dog ownership additive or exponential?

I think it's exponential if you have an old special dog you wanted and bought. Then the next 2-3 are rescues.

At least it's like that for us. Look at these adorable motherfrickers. 2 on the left are rescues.

One we bought on purpose, the second was a rescue that needed us! Plus she's gorgeous and a sweetheart. The one we bought on purpose is kind of a little bitch, but we love her, anyway.

With 2 dogs, that's now a huge PITA to ask.

Never been the case for us with our two dogs. And if no family/friends can’t do it...we just board them and factor that into costs of our trip. Most places give you a discounted rate for the second dog and will board them together.

Not me. #2 was an accident. Then Wife 2 wanted 1 so that's how I got to 3. Then 4 was Bret Michaels' fault.
