Why do people care about the British royalty?

I can’t fathom why people (mostly women) are so enthralled by them. They do nothing and are essentially just expensive remnants of history.

They're the biggest celebrities to people in the UK, and that I can understand (sort of).
But for people in the States I find it bizarre. I don't care when they have babies or get married. I barely care when people I know have babies or get married.

This. You don't even need a tour guide or booklet to see the sights in Westminster. Just follow the Japanese tourists with cameras from the Thames to Buckingham Palace and you'll see all things Royal and Parliamentary.

What I don't get is why people care anything at all about celebrities. At least the royal family is an important part of British history. I'd be more interested in sitting down for a chat with Queen Elizabeth than I would be with any American actor or pop star.

In my western Civ class, I teach my students about Henry VIII and Louis XIV and XVI, the Tsar's etc. and prety much how they are all related in one way or another. Pretty much after my class, they think the royals come from Alabama and all married their sisters and cousins.
