Why do gas stations still use fractions in gas prices in 2026?

Instead of $3.99 9/10 just list it as $3.99 or $4.00. stock market gave up on fractions decades ago.
Why are we still counting tenths of cents?

Because they make an extra 0.9 cents per gallon without most consumers thinking about it.
If they charged 3.99, they'd lose the money. If they charged 4.00, most consumers would realize the reality.
Not hard stuff here.

And then what? Not get gas?

And then what? Not get gas?

Think of it as decimals.
While the stock market stopped using fractions, it still uses decimals.

You have those who go to the same company, or those who go to the cheapest place they see. Neither party will not get gas because the sign is showing $0.01 more per gallon unless a nearby station is cheaper. If everyone does away with the fraction system, then it makes no difference.

Still seeing new gas stations being opened in BR and many closing as well. I believe most of the profits comes from what's sold inside, hot food, liquor, etc.

Dude. Gas is a commodity. You don't give up a commodity over a penny.
OP is absolutely right and you are overcomplicating it.

They all do it because no one wants to be the one to stop doing it, ceding a penny advantage to their competitors. Not that I’m advocating for it, but short of across the board legislation, this isn’t changing.

Andy Rooney did a bit on 60 Minutes where he went to gas stations, asked for exactly one gallon of gas (marked at say $1.89.9), handed them $1.90 and asked for his change. Bewilderment ensued.

How about the cash vs credit card price? Difference is far more than 1/10 of 1 cent.
