Any freezer manfactured after freon was banned have to work much harder to maintain subfreezing temps especially if it is poorly ventilated

How does one improve the ventilation?

That isn't correct. R600a, R134a and RC270 are all more efficient at temperature transfer than R12 and R22. The issue is they have steadily downgraded the quality and longevity of the compressors in consumer refrigeration.
There are actually lots of advantages for R600a and very few disadvantages. Ammonia r717 is even better but not something you want in an enclosed refrigeration unit in your home.

Why do freezer last a lot less than refrigerators?

My garage freezer was given to me by my grandmother about 10 years ago. She said she bought it in 1969. Sumbitch is still going strong as ever.

Serious answer: the freezers are not all manufactured by the same company.
We have GE fridges, but found out the freezers are made by Samsung, which we had intended to avoid by getting GE. Found that out after searching for a repairman willing to work on them.

Mine is located in my garage. I have a cheap fan sitting on top and blowing down the back of the freezer where the coils are. It keeps air circulating to push the heat away from the space between the wall and the freezer. Especially if located in a garage.

I still have my grandfathers old Montgomery Ward freezer from 1984. It runs like a champ.

I talked up Samsung washer and dryer sets the last time I posted in an appliance thread and had to replace both within 2 weeks. I'm going to try to reverse it and say that LG refrigerators, freezers and dishwashers are trash.

My family was the the opposite. My parents have a freezer in their garage that is 20 years old and still going strong. And that freezer is in the Texas heat and humidity. It’s a Kenmore by the way.
During that time span they’ve had 3 refrigerators.
